Although the area of the southern coast of Crete can boast a much smaller number of beaches, unlike those in the north of the island, they are definitely more calm and less crowded. The proximity of high mountains makes it in most cases extremely picturesque places. It is no different in the case of the beach located at the small town of Souda.
At the outset, we would like to mention that the place described in this article has nothing to do with the large seaport near Chania, near the land strip connecting the Akrotiri peninsula with the rest of Crete. It is worth knowing about it, because many people hearing the name Souda will first of all direct their search to this area of the northern coast.
The much smaller namesake of this seaport are located about 40 kilometers south of Rethymnon in close proximity to the quite popular holiday resort of Plakias. If you are going to relax there and you are lovers of hiking, we recommend spending one day on a trip to this place.
Until the early nineties, this place was known only to few tourists and local residents. During this period, the beach was led by a not very comfortable gravel road. The nudists, who found a perfect hideout, very quickly started using this limited accessibility.
Currently, access to Souda is not the slightest problem, since a comfortable asphalt road has been brought here for quite a long time. Although today this place is definitely more popular with ordinary tourists, you will still find many lovers of naturism here. Devotees of rest in a full bend are fond of the region of the eastern end of the beach. If you are a typical representative of classic textile, we recommend you the middle and west coast located right next to the parking lot.
Souda is at the end of the ravine, whose bottom is the Finikas River. This small stream fed by the mountain streams is full of water throughout the year. The good availability of water makes the valley green even at the peak of the holiday season. In several places along Finikas, you can see groves of the Cephonist palm Teofrast (Phoenix theophrastii), which you can know from places such as Vai and Preveli. Souda is one of the most important reserves, where this very rare species is found.
The characteristic location in the vicinity of high mountains makes, as in the case of other beaches in this area of Crete, you have to take into account the possibility of very windy weather. Particularly onerous are the days during which strong gusts from the land side appear. Unfortunately, in such periods, sunbathing and bathing are the domain of only those people who are not terrible sand carried by the rushing air. From our own experience we can assure you that meeting such a dust cloud is not the most pleasant experience.
Near the road and a small car park at the end of it, you will find several taverns and boarding houses where you can rent rooms. Souda is a very sleepy and peaceful place, in which it is in vain to look for night life attractions typical of the tourist parts of the resorts located on the northern coast. However, if you are not looking for this type of activity, or even want to escape from the city bustle, Souda will surely guarantee you enough peace.
Sandy-gravel beach located in the depths of a fairly large bay is about 400 meters long and has the complete infrastructure necessary for comfortable rest. In a few places there are rentals of sun loungers. Some of them are available as part of a free supplement to orders placed in the tavern located by the car park. On the beach you will also find showers with fresh water.
Overcoming the part of the New National Road constituting the bypass of Rethymnon, in the central part of this section of the road, take the road number 97 heading south towards Spili - Timpaki. After covering about 15 kilometers you will have the optionturning right into the road leading to Selia - Plakias. In recent years, this road has been constantly renovated, so we recommend you an alternative connection, which leads by a more picturesque route led through the Kouartaliotiko gorge.
A bit more than a kilometer away, there is another bifurcation heading for Koxare. In the distance you will see the Kouartaliotiko gorge behind which the town of Asomatos is located. In this village, turn right heading for the village of Lefkogia. From here, the route is quite easy and you will reach Plakias. When leaving outside the center of this village, continue west heading for the road leading along the coast. After about 3 kilometers, you will reach Souda.
