The old Venetian port and the lighthouse are one of the most recognizable elements of Rethymno . Although there are many beautiful places in the city, this area is one of the most picturesque and most important areas of the old part of the city.
The beginnings of the port's operations date back to the Byzantine times (after 961), but in those days it probably played only a local role. Just like Rethymno itself, which only under the Venetian occupation became the third largest urban center on the island.
It was the Venetians who, after taking control of Crete, led the port to flourish. One of the biggest challenges for the port of Rethymno was the problem of bottom siltation. Strong northeastern winds and sea currents regularly brought sand to it. The then city authorities considered building a new port, but the costs of such an undertaking were too high. The Venetians decided to solve the problem in a more economical way and… they sank a three-masted ship loaded with stones at the entrance to the port.
It was supposed to prevent sand from being brought into the port. As it turned out, this solution was short-lived and in 1882 it was necessary to dig the canal. Unfortunately, all these activities did not bring long-term improvement, and the problem has not been solved until today. In addition, this port was also too shallow to accommodate large merchant ships sailing in the Mediterranean at that time. Currently, the role of the port has been taken over by a larger and modern port located slightly further away, which is also struggling with the problem of silting.
In the former Venetian harbor, only small fishing boats and boats as well as small yachts are currently moored. Nowadays, you can also find a pirate cruise ship here. The entire embankment of the port is now used by taverns, which are numerous here. It is a very popular tourist spot of the city. On summer evenings, countless tourists hang out in pubs.
Rising at the end of a small stone breakwater, the lighthouse is the second largest Egyptian lighthouse in Crete. The first priority in this competition was the Faros lighthouse in Chania . The lighthouse in its present form was built during the short-lived occupation of Crete by the Egyptians in the 1830s. It is believed that the lighthouse was built as a reconstruction of an older Venetian lighthouse that used to stand in this place.
The total height of this structure is 9 meters, which actually makes it the smaller sister of the Chania lighthouse, which measures 21 meters. Its structure has oriental elements and slightly resembles a minaret. Its lower part is built on a polygonal plan, while the upper part is circular in cross-section. The focal plane of the light is 49 meters.
In 1864 the lighthouse in Rethymno came under the supervision of the French company Lighthouse Company. Unfortunately, today this building does not fulfill its original function anymore, nevertheless it is a place willingly visited not only by tourists and photographers, but also by all those seeking a romantic atmosphere.
