Glyka Nera (Γλυκά Νερά) is one of the most spectacular beaches in Crete. Located at the foot of a majestic, steep hillside high for several hundred meters, it is one of the better places for peaceful rest. There are relatively few people here who get to this beach by boat or on their own feet. It is worth knowing that the popular London Times in 2003 recognized this beach as one of the 20 most interesting in Europe.
The literal translation of the Greek name of this beach (as well as the popular English "sweet water") means 'sweet water'. This is not an unreasonable term, because in its place there are underground streams, whose water flows here into the sea. This is why, apart from the crystalline transparency of the water, this beach, even at the top of holiday heat, is characterized by the low temperature of the sea.
The beach, for such a secluded place, is relatively well organized. You will find here toilets and even a small tavern where you can buy food and drinks. It is located on the western edge of the coast, in a place which is called the island of Mermaid. In fact, this small piece of land, literally 2 or 3 meters away from the shore, is a gigantic rock that has slipped off a slope overlooking the beach. The entire upper part of the boulder was built for the needs of the taverna located here.
If you are wondering the name of this tavern and this place, then the paintings on the walls of this object may be a big explanation. The word mermaid (mερμαίδ) means nothing else in Greek like a mermaid.
The beach is covered with variable ground, which, depending on the place, passes from larger stones to fine gray sand. The stony bottom provides excellent transparency of the water, which even at a relatively large distance from the shore still provides the opportunity to enjoy the bottom.
During the high season on the Glyka Nera beach, there are also paid sun loungers. People who intend to spend a relatively small amount of time here, eg by taking a break in the passage of the E4 route between Loutro and Chora Sfakion, give up this "luxury". Most of them use the free shade of a dozen large tamarisks growing deep in the beach. In our opinion, this is a really good solution.
It is worth noting that this beach, like a few other nearby ones, belongs to places valued by nudists. If you are naked, you are advised against rest in this place. Personally, however, we believe that it is always worth showing tolerance for others - regardless of whether you belong to the group of "brave" nudists or "shameful" textiles.
There are two basic methods of getting to this beach. The first one is a short cruise from Chora Sfakion or Loutro . The second option, which we especially recommend to all those who do not avoid physical activity, is a walking walk. The shortest section separates the Glyka Nera beach from the asphalt road connecting Chora Sfakion and the town of Annopoli. We propose to leave the car on a wide bend at the beginning of the famous serpentine. The clear turn signal described Sweet Water Beach sets the direction in which you have to get out of the way. The trail to Glyka Nera is part of the route leading to Loutro. We described it in one of our previous articles, which you can find at the following address.
The trail is not difficult or too demanding. It is worth knowing, however, that in several places the trail leads along quite high stromisms, so people with anxiety of heights will require gentle support.
Due to the fact that the rock slope is sometimes unstable and it happens that the single rocks are falling off from it, it is not recommended to rest and stay directly next to it. In May 2015, a tragic accident occurred here, when rocks fell on the tourist beach. Unfortunately, due to serious injuries, this woman died on the spot.

Uwielbiam plaże w Plakias i jej okolicach.
