A view of the largest of the beaches located in the area of Falasarna
Arriving at Falasarna, the first thing that strikes you is the fact that this region of Crete is one of the better places for growing vegetables and fruits. Confirmation of this is the view from the road leading to Falasarna, from which stretches a beautiful panorama of orchards, olive groves and a large number of greenhouses. However, it is not the agricultural industry that has made this place famous, but the beaches here, which attract tourists every summer.
In 2002, Falasarna won the title of the best beach in Greece. This distinction is by no means accidental, because this place is truly unique by Crete standards. The long and, above all, wide beach called Pachia Amos is completely different from most of the "miniature" beaches available in Crete. Only a few places can be found on the whole island, which in this respect would be able to compete with Falasarna.
In addition to the previously mentioned beach called Pachia Amos, there is also a beach at the Ancient Falasarna, northern and southern excavations. The large extent of the sandy terrain causes that despite the large number of tourists coming here, everyone will find a piece of space where he can spread his beach towels and an umbrella. Of course, nothing prevents you from using rented sun loungers. The wide width of the beach gives the opportunity to practice not only water sports, but also beach volleyball, such as volleyball. The place has quite good tourist facilities, there is a large parking lot right on the beach, where you can leave your car without any problems. It is true that you can complain about a small number of dining options, but the two bars and a café operating here are certainly enough to satisfy the first hunger.
It is worth staying here until the evening hours, because this beach allows you to enjoy the amazing sunset, which is often a signal to start the night Beach Party. Since 1995, the youth from the village of Platanos organize a great Beach Party on the first or second Saturday. Famous DJs, free admission and relatively cheap drinks cause that many people stay here and dance all night long.
Falasarna is located about 60 km from Chania. When driving from New National Road from this city, you have to drive through Kissamos to turn into the side road on the right side of Platanos. Going further along the signposts you have to get to the edge of the hill stretching along the western coast of Crete. It is worth stopping at least for a moment to see the magnificent skyline stretching to the beach and the adjacent farmland. The next section is a narrow and winding road descending steeply towards the sea shore. It is worth to be careful in this episode, as this section of the route is quite demanding, especially when it comes back in the late evening hours.
