Tripiti beach and gorge

Redirected from: Tripiti beach and gorge

Tripiti panorama

The northern coast is in most cases places without surprises, described in most popular guides, annually explored (or simply occupied) by crowds of tourists coming from various corners of Europe (and the world). Of course, in no way does this diminish the charm of this region of Crete, you can still find there interesting and little-known places (such as the peninsula Rodopou located in the western part of Crete). However, if you want to feel the true climate of wild Crete, the best way will be a trip to the south of Crete. One of such places is Tripiti beach (Asterousia mountain range), about 70 km away from Heraklion.

Road to the Steno gorge

Mountain gravels

The last few kilometers travel to this beach is a gravel road led through the mountains or along the coast. In such conditions you will travel (depending on the chosen driving option) even about 10 kilometers. So before going to this beach, it is worth answering the question of whether you are ready to take the challenge of driving on such a difficult road. This is especially important if you go to Tripiti, a gravel road that starts in Vassiliki and leads through the small mountains of Asterousia. Below you can see a movie on which a journey through this section of gravel is recorded.

Amazing views and beautiful landscape that you can admire from the windows of the car largely compensate for the inconvenience of driving on this mountain route. A great impression is also made by driving alone along this road, which after a breakneck downhill with gravel curbs ends with passing through the Steno gorge. We do not hide that it was this gorge which was the main magnet that attracted us to Tripiti beach.

Steno Gorge

The entrance to this gorge creates a very strange mixture of feelings, in which admiration, fear, astonishment and a sense of danger fight with each other. In many places, the vertical rock walls are far from each other by a distance not much bigger than the width of the car. A narrow road on both sides is littered with fresh rock rubble, which fell off the walls. This view definitely does not encourage you to stop while going through the gorge.

Going to Tripiti from the village of Lendas you will not be crossing the Steno gorge. Nothing is lost to see this place, because the end of the ravine is right next to the beach. When leaving Tripiti, you can cross the gorge and then drive back to Lendas again.

No camping (not applicable to Greeks)

Tripiti is a small beach covered with a mixture of gray sand, gravel and stones. Despite the fact that the beach is unorganized and has a semi-natural appearance, one small tavern works here. The vast majority of people relaxing in this place are the local Cretans. This is evidenced by the fact that the vast majority of parked cars are pickups and off-road vehicles. A great surprise is the view of many caravans, campers and tents, which are in the vicinity of tablets strongly prohibiting camping and parking ... caravans. On the hill in the north-eastern part of the beach (Kalokambos), you can see small Minoan ruins.

How to get

Access to this place is possible in several ways, so you have to choose the road that will be most suitable for your location. When you reach Rethymnon or Heraklion head south, turn onto the national road number 97, which will lead you to the area of Mires, Aga Deka. A dense network of local roads goes from these towns to the south. Based on local signs, depending on the variant you have chosen, you must go to Vassiliki or Lendas. In both locations, gravel roads begin, which will take you to the beach of Tripiti (Asterousia).

Elafonisi - a beach with pink sand

Elafonisi - a beach with pink sand

Redirected from the site - Elafonissi. Elafonissi is a small island located at the end of the south-western edge of Crete. A characteristic feature of Elafonisi is the shallow lagoon connecting it with Crete. Warm and crystal clear water with a color changing from green to deep blue, is adjacent to beautiful wide beaches, whose white sand is in some places mixed with broken shells creating picturesque pink stripes. This amazing blend of colors makes Elafonissi easily claim to be called an exotic paradise.

Palm beach of Vai

Palm beach of Vai

Vai grew loud when in the 1970s a commercial of coconut Bounty bars was filmed on the background of a palm grove, which probably most of you associate. Coconuts falling in advertising were fabricated because only date palms grow on Vai. Nevertheless, paradise on earth was discovered. The hippies first appeared here, looking for a new mecca, and Vai became a giant camping site surrounded by a mountain of garbage.
