Malia

The city of British tourists

Malia (Greek: Μάλια) is a city that is one of the largest tourist centers in Crete. Every year, Malia experiences a real invasion of tourists - mainly young residents of England. A modest population of 3722 permanent residents in the summer season becomes a small percentage of the total number of people staying in this city. This amount of visitors obviously has a very positive impact on the economic aspects of this city and has a very large impact on the development of the tourism industry in Malia. One can not, however, forget about the cultural differences between the indigenous inhabitants and the very "relaxed" British youth, as this often resulted in frictions between the local community and tourists staying temporarily. At one time, these conflicts even caused protests of the inhabitants of Malia, who were tired of the behavior of British tourists.

Pros and cons

Young English begin their evening The beginning of the evening party

If you want to spend your holidays in Crete and take into account your stay in this city, it is worth taking into account these factors before starting the holidays. In particular, this will apply to stays carried out in hotels located in the center of this tourist center. Real life begins in this city only late in the evening and lasts practically until the morning, when many people end their day "full of attractions." Generalizing, it is a loud city, so if you are focused on an intense tour of Crete and want to rest at night it will be better if you look for a hotel in another town or one that will be located on the outskirts of Malia.

Malia is a town with an extremely extensive accommodation base. Even in the high season, there should be no problem finding vacancies. Many hotels are located directly on the beach and practically almost all have their own pools. Mali is also a very easy access to all service points, local tour agencies, souvenir shops and local specialties. Very important is also the large availability of taverns and bars, here everyone will find something to their own pocket and a lot of competition between the premises means that almost every order is rewarded with some giveaways. The only thing you need to get used to is a large number of beaters encouraging you to try the dishes in the premises in front of which they stand. Unfortunately, they are sometimes troublesome. A big plus is also a large number of car rental companies in which you can buy the freedom to explore the island.

History

The current subordination of Malia to the tourism industry may give many people the illusion of a short history of this city. But nothing more wrong, its roots date back to the Middle Bronze Age when in the nineteenth century BC a palace was built, which in the eighteenth century BC was rebuilt after the destruction caused by many archaeologists by the earthquake. Around 1420 BC it was burned, which led to the final collapse of this palace. The ruins discovered in 1915 by the Greek archaeologist Hadzidaki s and are the remains of the palace of this period. Since 1922, the site has been run by the French archaeological school École française d'Athènes .

Location and access

Malia is located on the north coast in the central-eastern part of Crete. It is located roughly in the middle of the section of the New National Road (E75) dividing Agios Nikolaos and Heraklion . Currently, work is under way on a new section of the New National Road, so that after the extension the road will bypass the city center, which can not cope with the amount of traffic on this route. If you travel on the New National Road through Malia, it will be with a lotthe probability you will encounter traffic jams and traffic restrictions in this city. However, you will not be left alone to travel in a car, because it will be hard to find a better alternative route. We also warn about maintaining a large amount of distrust of people who are quad and scooters that are often encountered in this area. Sometimes these vehicles are driven by people who have a faint idea of how to behave properly on the road and, what's worse, accustomed to left-sided traffic.

Do tej pory nad morzem byliśmy dwa razy -raz wybraliśmy marsz główną ulicą pełną tawern i kafejek (i wypożyczalni quadów) , dziś postanowiliśmy nadłożyć drogi aby pójść bezpieczniejszą drogą.

Agios Nikolaos

Agios Nikolaos

Agios Nikolaos (Άγιος Νικόλαος) is a small town with less than 20,000 inhabitants. permanent residents (according to statistical data from 2001). This city is the capital of the Lasithi nomos. It is located in the central-eastern part of Crete, about 65 kilometers east of Heraklion. It is one of the first tourist resorts in Crete. Already in 1965, much earlier than in other cities of this island, the first hotel was opened here. Currently, Agios Nikolaos does not play such an important role in servicing tourist traffic in Crete, as it did years ago. Despite the fact that the city must now compete with other towns located in this area of Crete (such as Plaka, Elounda, Istro, Kalo Chori), every year thousands of tourists rest here from all corners of Europe.

Rethymnon - a city of the Renaissance

Rethymnon - a city of the Renaissance

Rethymnon with less than 40,000 inhabitants, it is the third and largest city of Crete after Heraklion and Chania. The city lies in the north-western part of Crete, more or less in the middle of the New National Road section connecting Chania and Heraklion. Despite the fact that this place was already populated in the Minoan period, almost no traces from that period have survived to this day.

Sitia

Sitia

Sitia is the city that has the most "naj" in its sleeve ;-) It is the smallest city of Crete, the easternmost, with the quietest atmosphere and although it is the least developed compared to other Cretan cities, it's its residents are the most warm visitors. Less than 10,000 population of Sitia makes the city the smallest in Crete. Some even go a step further and say perversely that it is rather the largest village of Crete.

Będą tłumy i komercja.
Masakra
Pamiętam lekki chłód w porównaniu z upałem sierpniowym poza wąwozem i taką duszącą wilgoć
Ciekawe miejsce. Idąc tam , próbowaliśmy cofnąć czas, wyobrażając sobie wioskę w pełnym rozkwicie…
