In ancient times, they were called "Korisia", but today the current name deriving from the Arabic word lake is much more popular. Kournas is a rather small and relatively shallow water reservoir, its area is about 580 thousand. sqm. and the maximum depth is about 45 meters. Many legends circulate about the creation of this lake. One of them says that the inhabitants of the village formerly in this place did not live according to God's commandments. An angry God decided to punish them and ordered that the rain falling for many days sank the whole village together with the inhabitants. The only person who survived this cataclysm was the priest's daughter, who according to this legend is seen sitting on the rock combing his hair.
View of the Kournas lake and the White Mountains
The beautiful location at the foot of the White Mountains, which is reminiscent of alpine landscapes, makes Kournas one of the most visited tourist attractions of Western Crete. Unfortunately, this popularity has a negative impact on the ecosystem of this lake and currently Kournas is protected under the Natura 2000 program. Tourism has also clearly affected the surroundings of this lake, where more and more taverns, shops and bars are growing.
For 7 € per hour you can rent a water bike from which you can observe geese, crabs and maybe even small sea snakes. With a bit of luck you will see freshwater turtles, which according to the locals most often rest on the south-eastern coast of Kournas. Sometimes herons and cormorants also come to the lake.
Thanks to ubiquitous direction indicators, access above the lake is not a major problem. Taking the E75 road, do not miss the Georgioupoli exit. There is a relatively easy path from this place. About 400 meters from the lake you can come across some confusing signposts pointing straight ahead or to the right. Regardless of the chosen route, you will reach exactly the same place.
