Abandoned village of Mili

Only a few kilometers separate the bustling city of Rethymno from Mili, a village abandoned by its inhabitants. This place is also known as the village hidden in the gorge. This name perfectly describes Mili because it is located on the edge of a small and green ravine of the same name. Although Mili was abandoned by its inhabitants, in recent years it has become a tourist attraction. It must be admitted that a walk between old buildings, which are slowly absorbed by the surrounding nature, gives rise to a slight thrill, and a more exuberant imagination while looking into the nooks and crannies of old houses may suggest scenarios straight from horror movies.

Mili Village

Mili's historical roots probably date back to the Middle Ages. In the 17th century, due to the presence of water sources, water mills were built in the village, which is where the name Mili comes from. Because Mylos means mill in Greek. Thanks to their work, Mili regularly supplied Rethymnon and the surrounding villages with flour for baking bread.

The establishment of the mills was part of the agricultural policy implemented by the Venetians then occupying Crete. The policy of self-sufficiency pursued by the Venetians was of great importance for the island.

When the Venetians were driven out of Crete by the Turks, the new invaders also became interested in Mila. The constant flow of water from the river, fertile soil and the proximity of the city of Rethymnon made the village a tasty morsel for subsequent occupiers.

Mili Village

The development of technology meant that the mills built in Mila could not compete with more modern devices in terms of efficiency. Nevertheless, it was not the progress of civilization that caused the village to be abandoned by its inhabitants. The direct reason why the Cretans left their homes in Mila in 1972 was the river flooding in winter and landslides that threatened safety. Due to this, 36 villagers moved to the neighboring village of Ano Mili (Upper Mili).

Abandoned Mili comes alive during the tourist season. During this period, the abandoned village becomes a tourist attraction. There is even a tavern where you can eat, rest and relax during your stay there. You can walk around the former Mila quite freely, but you must remember that the structure of abandoned buildings is constantly weakening. Therefore, climbing the upper floors of houses may be dangerous. Nature is also taking its toll, absorbing more and more buildings every year.

Mili village consumed by vegetation

To get here, you can of course travel by rented car or scooter. From the center of Rethymno you can also get there by the red Rethymno City Tour bus, which stops at Mila five times a day.

When planning to come to the village of Mili, it is also worth considering crossing the gorge, which is quite easy to overcome and the entrance to it is located on the edge of the village of Xiro Chorio. The area is truly unique, the route is pleasant and the vegetation is captivating. The journey will be accompanied by lakes, waterfalls, two Christian churches, and old water mills. In summer, there is a lot of shade in the gorge, so you can walk here without fear. However, if you are going here in winter, you must bear in mind that after rain, water can make it much more difficult to get through it.

When traveling around Crete, it is not difficult to pay attention to the fact that most of the beaches there are relatively small and short. For this reason, people who are used to our national Baltic standards, where the sandy coast stretches for kilometers, may experience a special disappointment. However, fortunately, nothing is lost, because Crete in its rich arsenal of various beaches can boast of those that allow for long walks along the coast. One of them, our favorite is the Kommos beach located in the south of the central part of the island.

Wstępnie myślimy o tym, by w przyszłym roku majowy wyjazd zrealizować samochodem a wrześniowy - samolotem. (...)

Burza i ulewny deszcz nadszedł dość gwałtownie. Na Samarię wyrusza się wcześnie rano a wtedy pogoda była ładna. Źle jest oceniać kogoś jeśli się nie zna okoliczności. (...)
