Most of the Cretan museums refer to the history of the island with their exhibits, whose history dates back to the distant ancient times. However, this should not be surprising, because Crete is a real treasury full of this type of artifacts. It is worth remembering, however, that the island also has an equally interesting and equally dramatic history written over the last several hundred years. The exhibits gathered in the Military Museum in Chromonastiri refer to this subject, much closer to our times.
This town is located about 11 kilometers south of Rethymnon. It is a small Greek village with almost 500 inhabitants, whose name means "Color and monastery". It was built at the turn of the twelfth and thirteenth century by the Venetians who ruled then Crete. In recent years, this place has been awarded several times with the title of the most orderly and traditional Cretan communities.
Just on the outskirts of this village is a military museum, which was located in a beautiful Venetian villa also called Villa Claudio. In 2010, the building was restored and subjected to careful reconstruction. The quality of the work done is easily appreciated by walking around the halls where the exhibits collected by this museum are displayed. Within the renovated complex, two small conference rooms have been prepared, in which various kinds of events related to the history of Crete are organized.
The museum in Chromonastiri is also one of the places that is eagerly visited by Greek soldiers in active service. At the end of last year, a meeting with commandos serving in the First Airborne Squadron stationed in Maleme (1ης ΜΑΛ) was held at the museum. Among the soldiers, particular interest was generated by information related to the German operation of Mercury aimed at mastering Crete from the air.
Before entering the museum you will find quite a large collection of military vehicles and artillery equipment, among which there were several American tanks, tracked carriers, as well as a Bell UH-1H Iroquois helicopter and a small Cessna U-17A Skywagon aircraft. Inside the museum, a large number of different types of objects are directly associated with the Greek army or with fights in Crete. Among the hundreds of exhibits you will find such as medals, uniforms, white and firearms, as well as extremely imaginative dioramas.
It is worth mentioning that the entrance ticket to the museum grounds costs only 1.5 €. At this price, apart from visiting the facility yourself, you can also count on a lot of information provided by the employees of this museum. One of them will tell you a very interesting history of this place and will show you some amazingly clever architectural solutions used by Venetian builders.
Chromonastiri is located south of Rethymno. Definitely the easiest way to get here by car. All you have to do is leave the New National Road in the central part of Rethymno, using the exit heading to Agia Irini or Roussospiti. Then just follow the clear signs indicating the way to this museum.
A good way to get there is also to use the double-decker bus that goes around the village around Rethymno. For the amount of 12 €, you can buy a day ticket, which allows you to visit each of the attractions located on the route of this vehicle. When traveling around Crete, it is not difficult to pay attention to the fact that most of the beaches there are relatively small and short. However, fortunately, nothing is lost, because Crete in its rich arsenal of various beaches can boast of those that allow for long walks along the coast. One of them, our favorite is the Kommos beach located in the south of the central part of the island.

The largest and richest in the collection is located in the capital of the island of Heraklion. It is worth visiting them especially that a long-term refurbishment has recently been completed and you can finally appreciate the vastness of the collected items. Nevertheless, other museums are also worth visiting, even though their resources are not as impressive as those in Heraklion. This particularly applies to the Archaeological Museum of Chania.

Usually, these are things that were in everyday surroundings and were used by the Cretans living at the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
