A small wooden signpost pointing to Milia (Μηλιά) may not be a great incentive to visit this place. Many people going through the Gorge Gorge pass it without much reflection. It's a shame because Milia is one of the most charming and surprising places. For many people, the only gravel road leading there can be a kind of attraction.
Milia is an authentic mountain settlement, which most probably dates from about the seventeenth century. The contemporary history of this place, however, does not reach so far. The first plans to adapt this village for tourism purposes appeared in the eighties of the last century. The main initiator of this project was Iakovos Tsourounakis. His vision of bringing this settlement back to life was initially accepted with disdain and disbelief. At that time, it was an ordinary ruin that had not been inhabited for over 40 years. Only friendship with the resident Giorgosem Makrakis, who had similar dreams, caused that both gentlemen proceeded to act.
The first stage of work lasted nearly three years. The revitalization of this place was done with great care and was based on local materials that were originally used to build these houses. As a result, the impact of this investment on the local environment has been significantly reduced.
In 1993, this place was opened for tourists for the first time. Despite the initial skeptical voices, the vast majority of local residents highly appreciated the effort put in to bring Milia back to life. Five years later, the band was joined by Tasos, who was born and lived in Athens. Today, it is he and Giorgos who are responsible for the functioning and further development of this place.
A dozen beautifully restored stone buildings have been adapted for tourism. The smallest of them are small stone houses, the total area of which does not exceed 15 sq m. In each of them, however, you will find a modern bathroom and a furnace for heating.
Although this piece of equipment on Crete may seem completely unnecessary, however, we assure you that in Milia it is quite useful. Even during the spring, not to mention winter, it's quite cold here. The shady valley, full of greenery and trees, makes you feel a clear drop in temperature in the evenings with dusk.
The interiors of the houses are traditional Cretan furniture made of wood. Some of them are restored antiques that were once used by local residents.
It is worth noting that the electricity used in this place as a whole comes from renewable sources. The impact of people visiting here on the local ecosystem has been limited to a minimum. The water used in the houses is subject to filtration and then it is used entirely for garden irrigation. For cleaning in the village of Milia do not use chlorine-containing chemicals from the very beginning.
Even if you do not plan to spend the night in this place, it is definitely worth visiting this place. Although the road leading here is gravel, however, it is in good condition and it does not present any difficulty. Even less experienced drivers should be able to cope without the slightest hassle.
The shady valley, which is full of greenery, makes Milia have its unique atmosphere. Beautiful stone houses separated by narrow paths border with semi-wild gardens overgrown with various plants. Many of these are typical of Crete herbs such as rock rose, or Cretan purge.
The tavern / restaurant (εστιατόριο) located in the central part of the village is a very unique place where you can taste many traditional dishes served practically straight from the kitchen. Most of them are based on plants grown in the surrounding fields. The menu is a relative term, and it will be much more accurate to write that there is something like a table of dishes in the tavern. It is written on what has just come from the cook's hand. And we can assure you that choosing these dishes is notyou will be disappointed. This is where we ate one of the most delicious briam.
A visit to the village of Milia, if you do not want to spend the night here, it's best to combine with the rest on Elafonissi beach. On the way back, look for the modest signposts, which are located about 3 kilometers before the famous tunnel in the Gorge Toplia. We used the departure to the towns of Vlatos and Rogida. Then, after reaching the first of these towns, we turned right. We defeated the further part of the road following the characteristic wooden signposts. In the upper part of the driveway, the asphalt surface ends and goes into a gutter, which is however in very good condition so there is no problem with getting there. The road is very picturesque and is an additional bonus of this trip.
