Dikte Cave (Psychro)

One of the tourist attractions eagerly visited by people spending their holidays in Crete is the Dikte (Psychro) cave. The main factors that attract people to this cave are a rich and varied dripstone robe and a close connection with mythology. This cave, according to the beliefs of ancient Greeks, was considered the birthplace of Zeus. It is mythology that distinguishes this cave among 3,000 other caves located in Crete. It is also worth emphasizing that the history of human existence in this place is over 6,000 years.

Dikte Cave

The history of the Dikte cave

The oldest traces of presence of people in this place are dated by archaeologists to the Neolithic times. The great popularity of this place among the population of ancient Greece had a negative impact on the possibility of determining the earlier function performed by the Dikte cave. Former pilgrims visiting this place effectively stripped the grotto of traces and remnants of previous cultures. Probably in the Minoan times the grotto (except the religious function) could have been inhabited. It is also assumed that it was a burial place.

From the 16th to the 19th century, the cave was used by shepherds and hunters as a shelter. In 1886, Joseph Hatzidakis made the first officially recorded archaeological exploration of this cave. Three years later, Sir Evans arrived for a short reconnaissance. However, it was not until 1899 that systematic archaeological excavations were started there. Work carried out under the supervision of English scientists J. Demargne and David Hogarth enabled the discovery of the altar and many objects used during the past religious rites. Unfortunately, due to the barbaric techniques (eg through the use of dynamite) and the robbery way of excavation, many objects were irretrievably destroyed.

Where is?

Dikte Cave is worth visiting on the occasion of crossing the Lasithi Plateau . The cave is located in its northern part. It is most convenient to leave the car in a paid car park (price: € 2) in the village of Psychro, from where you have to take a short climb. The entrance to the cave is located about 200 meters above the car park. A large part of the road leads by stone stairs, on which you can move reasonably well. Lazy tourists can take advantage of donkey services that "park" at the foot of a mountain slope. However, if you are not afraid of the effort and intend to make a trip on foot, we recommend that you (especially when the day is sunny) bring the right amount of water with you. The upper part of the trail leading to the Dikte cave is quite steep and it takes a lot of energy to overcome it. The pleasant coolness inside the cave will allow you to regain your strength before the return journey.

The cave is well prepared for a large group of tourists. The interior is well lit and the descent to the bottom is led through a "civilized" concrete stairs. After the cave, tourists can follow the marked paths that lead places through wooden platforms. At the entrance there is an entry fee of 8 €.

Bear's Cave

The cave is less than 1 km from Moni Gouvernetou Monastery. You will reach it using the pedestrian trail that has been marked out along the slope of the Avlaki Gorge. In the middle part of this cave there is a large stalagmite next to which there is a small water tank. Standing at the right angle and arming with a large dose of imagination can be seen in this stone block of bear that gave the name for this place.

Melidoni Cave (Gerontospilios)

Currently, Melidoni Cave (originally called Gerontospilios) is associated mainly with the tragic events that took place here in 1824. Archaeological excavations carried out in this place, however, prove that the history of this beautiful cave is much longer and goes back to Neolithic times. During the reign of Minoans there was one of the important places of worship here. Mention of Melidoni also appear in legends and myths, according to which the bronze giant Talos was to be protected.

Wstępnie myślimy o tym, by w przyszłym roku majowy wyjazd zrealizować samochodem a wrześniowy - samolotem. (...)

Burza i ulewny deszcz nadszedł dość gwałtownie. Na Samarię wyrusza się wcześnie rano a wtedy pogoda była ładna. Źle jest oceniać kogoś jeśli się nie zna okoliczności. (...)
