If we were to list the most beautiful beaches of Crete, Kedrodasos would undoubtedly be at the forefront of such a list. Although it is located just a kilometer from Elafonissi, the most famous beach in Crete, even in the high season, Kedrodasos still remains wild and unobstructed by crowds. You will not find here, at least for now, sunbeds and umbrellas and other typical tourist infrastructure such as changing rooms, toilets, beach bars or taverns.
However, you will find a beautiful beach with light sand and dark rocks, the sea of stunning color and an unusual juniper forest covering an area of 11 hectares. It is still such an unspoiled paradise that requires care and respect from people.
In addition to the picturesque beach and the unusual color of the water, the uniqueness of this place is determined by the juniper forest growing on the coastal dunes. It is popularly believed to be a cedar forest, but in fact the coastal dunes are overgrown by small and twisted spiny junipers ( Juniperus oxycedrus subsp. Macrocarpa) and Phoenice junipers ( Juniperus phoenicea ).
Very harsh climatic conditions prevail within the coastal dunes. Only those plant species that are resistant to strong environmental factors such as high salt concentration in the soil, salt fog, strong winds and sand mobility can settle this place. Junipers are just such plants that can withstand these adversities well. At the same time, they reduce the effect of the wind, keep the sand in check and thus stabilize the dunes. These dunes also host several rare and endemic species of fauna and flora.
This rare and beautiful place has been classified as a priority natural habitat under EU Directive 92/43, which means it is at risk of disappearance. The European Community bears a special responsibility for the protection of the areas included in this category.
Places like Kedrodasos are quickly being eaten up by the tourism industry. So you can ask yourself how it happened that this beach is still not a tourist destination like the famous Balos or Elafonissi lagoons. These places, for a change, struggle with the excess of visitors, which slowly destroys them. Of course, it's not that Kedrodasos is completely deserted. However, while tourists on Elafonissi or Balos have to be counted in thousands a day, several dozen people reach Kedrodasos.
The key to the puzzle is, of course, the lack of good directions. While Elafonissi can be comfortably reached by car or bus, almost to the beach, in the case of Kedrodasos you can only dream of such amenities.
There is a narrow road from the road leading to the Elafonisi beach, which we can get only near Kedrodasos. It is over two kilometers of unpaved gravel road. Of course, many tourists drove an ordinary passenger car on such roads. However, it is worth knowing that, according to the conditions set by local car rental companies, it is forbidden to use such a road in most of the rented cars, and possible insurance will not cover the cost of repair. In the event of any damage, we will pay for the repair of the damage out of our own pocket.
In addition, this road ends about 400 m in front of the beach. Therefore, the remaining distance has to be covered on one's feet, which takes about 20 minutes on average.
It is also worth mentioning that the parking lot at the end of this road is very small, and those who came later must leave their car along the access road. The farther you park from the parking lot, the longer you will have to walk. So, as long as a comfortable and paved road with a large parking lot is not built, you can be sure about the future of Kedrodasos.
You can also get to Kedrodasos on foot by following the E4 route from Elafonissi. However, although both places are only a kilometer away, the time needed to cover this section is about an hour. The path of the keys between the surrounding rocks, increasing the distance and time of the walk. Going towards Kedrodasos, it is worth looking for the E4 trail markings and sticking to it because the rocks form a maze in some places. You can also reach Kedrodasos from the side of Krios, but the distance between the two beaches is about 7 km one way.
The lack of beach amenities means that if you want to spend a few hours on Kedrodasos, you have to take everything you need on the beach with you.
When staying here, however, you must remember that Kedrodasos requires special care from all of us. So that others can also enjoy the beauty of this place, when leaving the beach, take everything you brought with you. This is especially true of garbage. There are no cleaning crews, waste containers, etc. The fairy-tale beach and unique forest will be clean as long as the guests themselves take care of it. Unfortunately, it is sad to note that some of the people who come here do not care about the environment and leave behind a lot of plastic garbage. During the holiday season, this beach is also visited by "wild" campers, who can also leave a mess behind. Places like this can only count on responsible tourists and volunteers who organize the cleaning of such wild beaches from time to time.
Kedrodasos Beach is located 76 km southwest of the city of Chania, so the destination of their trips should rather be tourists vacationing in the area of western Crete.

Odkryłem ją w zeszłym roku. Moim zdaniem jest o wiele ładniejsza od mojej jak dotąd ukochanej Elafonisi. Świetne miejsce do snurkowania, mnóstwo pięknych rybek i niesamowicie czysta woda. Mam nadzieje, że nie zostanie długo odkryta przez turystów i nie zostanie zniszczona przez masową turystykę. Cudowna plaża.
