Although there is still a lot of time left to the holiday season, and the aura outside the Polish window is still in a typically winter climate, many analysts are already wondering what this year's tourist season in Greece and Crete will be like. The data already collected in the reservation systems allow us to draw the first conclusions. They show that this year's tourist season in Crete can be really hot.
Mr. Manolis Tsakalakis, President of Rethymno Hoteliers' Association, said that one of the signs of a large number of guests is the high level of reservations on planes arriving in Crete. To his knowledge, about half of all available seats have already been sold. This is a very high level of booking, as in this period in recent years the occupancy rate was usually around 10%.
Currently, however, only single charter and scheduled flights are carried out to Crete airports. A significant increase in air traffic is expected only at the turn of March and April. It is during this period that some hotels operating only during the tourist season will start operating. However, Mr. Manolis Tsakalakis predicts that the actual start of the tourist season will take place in May, when average hotel occupancy is expected to be between 60 and 70%. On the other hand, the months from June to September will be a real test of the possibilities of the tourist sector in Crete. During this period, hotel occupancy is expected to reach 100%.
Mr. Tsakalakis expects not only a large number of guests from the European Union, but also from Israel, America and countries such as India and China. A good prognosis for the tourism industry is an interesting observation that could be noticed at the recently concluded travel fair in Berlin. Despite economic turbulence and high inflation, many visitors to this event declared that this year they would not save on holidays. There is still a hunger for travel among many people. Of course, this approach cannot be translated into the attitudes of citizens of other countries, but it may be a repeating trend in other countries.
For now, all data indicate that this year's season will be very successful for the tourism industry in Crete. Over the last year, the island attracted about 5 million tourists and currently, quite conservative analyzes allow estimating an increase in this number by about 4-5%. Unfortunately, in all this optimism there is one fear that has been repeated for the last few years: will there be enough hands to work? Serious staff shortages are already expected this year as well. According to preliminary estimates, around 6,000 will remain unstaffed at the peak of the season. jobs. And although some of you may ask yourself how this is possible in a country with one of the worst unemployment rates in the EU, let us point out in advance that the answer is not simple and it is rather a topic for a completely separate article.
