When we wrote to you more than two years ago about the bizarre plans for the construction of a hotel complex in the vicinity of the Gonates cliff in Plakias, we hoped that this project would never enter the implementation phase. We also quietly hoped that the local authorities, which announced a series of legal actions aimed at stopping this investment, would be equal to the task by blocking this construction. The Gonates Cliff was also to be placed under strict protection, which was to block all such projects and plans in the future. Unfortunately, time has shown that all these were only vain hopes. The construction of the hotel complex has just started and has started with earthworks, which have already irrevocably changed the landscape of this characteristic place in Plakias.
Pictures that can be found on the websites of local news portals , as well as on social media groups , show that heavy equipment entered the work already at this stage. Preparation of the future construction site is carried out with the use of, inter alia, bulldozers and excavators that brutally remove tens of cubic meters of soil. This place has already changed irretrievably.
We read these reports with great sadness and they arouse great anger in us. Plakias is a special place for us, which has been a base for us several times to explore the area. We were attracted by a somewhat sleepy atmosphere, much less entertaining than that which can be found in the towns located on the northern coast. We have always come back here very willingly, and what worked strongly in favor of Plakias was the amazing landscape of this place with the lonely Gonates cliff overlooking the southern end of the beach.
When looking at such new investments, we always try to understand the needs of local residents. We understand the necessity of changes in the infrastructure, e.g. building roads, which simply facilitate or even enable a normal life. And although such investments rarely have no impact on the landscape and no impact on the natural environment, we still accept them.
Reading about the plans for the construction of this complex, it is difficult for us to find even the slightest justification for such a location. Yes, over the last few years Plakias has been constantly changing, with new hotels appearing. The buildings in the central part of the village have become a bit denser, but there is still a lot of free space. After all, someone decides to destroy the place that distinguishes Plakias as part of his investment. For many tourists, regulars of this town, the Gonates rock is a kind of symbol whose natural appearance is now being lost. After the reactions of many people and the large number of views of our news from two years ago, we can see how difficult it is for many people, including us, to come to terms with the start of this construction. We want to believe that this is not the end of the fight to save this place ... but probably no one will stop this waltz. Knowing life, one investment will give rise to another one that will completely destroy the cliff.
