The history of an abandoned ski resort next to the Nida Plateau

The recently promoted initiative to strengthen winter tourism in Crete, which has been strongly promoted, is nothing new. Ideas for creating an alternative holiday offer, which is a counterweight to a typical holiday beach, appeared already at the end of the 1970s. In this period, construction of several ski resorts was begun in the mountainous regions of Crete. One of them was located above the Nida plateau on one of the slopes of the Psiloritis massif. Today, the dreary remains of this building are a attraction and a varied landscape only for goats and sheep grazing in this place.

This place became the subject of one of the last films made by Nikos Sarantos. The oblivious facility is located at an altitude of 1500 meters above sea level a few kilometers west of the northern end of the Nida Plateau.

Probably some of you ask yourself: why this initiative turned out to be a failure? What made this interesting idea not burn out? Well, to answer these questions you have to go back to 1977 when the construction of this ski resort began. At the cost of millions of drachmas, a complex was created, including a hotel and restaurant building, a garage for a ratrak and a ski slope with a ski lift. At the beginning of the 1980s, several triumphal handshakes of local officials initiated the activity of this center. In the same year, he accepted the first guests who, as part of the concept of luxury at that time, were to take a tour of the surrounding mountains.

Unfortunately, time has revealed the many shortcomings of this project in a very drastic way. At the outset, it is worth mentioning that despite the use of huge funds for the construction of this complex, nobody thought about it to improve the condition of the mountain road leading to this place. A stony gravel driveway, which may be a challenge for typical passenger cars even in the summer, became virtually impossible to overcome in winter.

The irregular supply of electricity turned out to be a great difficulty in serving the guests. The unreliable energy network meant that the electrical equipment in the ski resort often had to be powered by an aggregate. Not only was it a source of noise, but very often the exhaust gas emitted by the engine of this device was directed directly to the slope. This caused irritation among guests who understandably wanted to enjoy the charms of the surrounding nature and cleanliness of the mountain air.

These and many other factors caused that after a few years the place began to decline. Today, the remains of this ski resort are a living example of how public money was wasted during periods of prosperity in Greece. The remnants of the "Ski resort" signposts and announcements of revitalization of these facilities appearing once in a while arouse unambiguous smiles among local residents.

W drugiej połowie kwietnia 2016 jadąc w górę z Anogii na Nidę spotkaliśmy zjeżdżający z góry busik z małym ratrakiem na przyczepce - może nadal są jednak podejmowane próby reanimacji tego miejsca? Na górze na pewno nie było typowego wyciągu - ale może w zimie był demontowalny "jumbo"?
