Encouraging descriptions in guidebooks and the equally positive relationships we have encountered on the internet have made us, when we planned our first vacation in Crete, Kritsa was among those places that we had to see. When we reached the largest village of Crete, we were enchanted by its charming alleys and despite the strong southern sun, we were gladly wading through the thicket of narrow streets and narrow passages separating the next houses. Eventually, quite accidentally, we came to one of the central Kritsa squares, where the Nostimon store is located.
The charming stone house where the store is located and the goods displayed before him encouraged us to enter. An honest smile of Eva working here greeted us. We did not expect to hear a Polish language in such a place, certainly not from one of the people working here. Very quickly Eve gave to try what Crete is most famous for, namely oil, honey and the amazing rakomelo produced by the Asmarianakis family.
However, it is not only unique products that have won our hearts, but most of all Ewa working in Nostimon. Thanks to it, we could learn first-hand how it looks, not at all easy life on this island. This meeting was described in our first subjective guide to Crete . As it turned out later, this story contained a few minor inaccuracies and funny understatements, which over time began to live their own lives. By the way, I warmly greet Mother Marika :)
It is difficult to give a clear and short answer to the question of what is particularly worth recommending from the assortment of this store. Over the next few years, a lot of new things have appeared in Nostimon, including some truly unique ones. From our own experience, we can write to you that all our visits end with the discovery of new products that are on our list of permanent Cretan purchases. The proposals that you will find below are just a small part of Nostimon's offer, so it's quite possible that your attention will be directed at something completely different.
If you are a fan of honeys, we can confidently assure you that you will not leave this store empty handed. Our favorite favorite is Cretan thyme honey. If you have never had the opportunity to try it, then when visiting Nostima, we recommend that you do it. You certainly will not be disappointed with its unique delicate flavor.
In our opinion, the best rakomelo in Crete
Another product is the already famous rakomelo prepared personally by the Asmarianakis family. Although today alcohol is available in most tourist stores and even in some mini-super-markets, we can assure you that the one sold in Nostimon is unique. By drinking it you will feel a delicate aroma of cinnamon intertwined with the fragrance and sweetness of the Cretan honey. We particularly eagerly reach for this drink during the cold winter evenings. Even a small amount of it allows you to feel the warmth of the Cretan summer that melts on the body.
In Nostimon you will also find a fantastic Physis of Crete oil with very low acidity. This is the highest quality product with a very delicate taste and aroma, which will work perfectly in your kitchen. This oil is sold in cans of very different capacities, so even if you do not have too much space in your luggage, you should be able to fit this oil.
In the shop you will also find a rich selection of aromatic oils sold in fancy carafes. We would like to emphasize that this is not a factory mass product created on an industrial scale, but a genuine local product created before the season by hands of owners and Ewa.
Aromatic herbs are one of the gifts of Crete, which always comes back to Poland with us. Among the many mixtures and various herbs available in Nostimon, we always pay special attention to mountain oregano. A bit of dried leaves rubbed in the fingers fills the kitchen with an amazing aroma. Its intensity is simply unattainable for herbs sold in our stores. If you loveyou want to cook this mountain oregano should become one of your obligatory purchases.
Finally, it is also worth mentioning the rich assortment of cosmetics available in Nostimon. Of course, many of them are based on the perfect Cretan olive oil. Recently, on the shelves you will also find a wide selection of products sold under the brand name OlivePlus, which are unique products created exclusively by the company "Physis of Crete", a brand created by the Asmarianakis family. The recipe of each of them is a well-thought-out combination of natural ingredients of the highest quality.
Finally, it is worth mentioning that the same products as in Nostimon can also be found in the store located a little lower down the village near the main road leading through Kritsa. Just look for the Physis of Crete logo.
Today, we can not imagine a holiday in Crete without visiting Kritsa and Nostimon, which we wish you well.
The Hydria pottery workshop in Asomatos is one of those special places where you can still see the Cretan craft. Stavros Kallonakis is handed out by unique ceramics with high quality and interesting patterns. We recommend!
When in 2008 for the first time we came to Nida, we dubiously entered the only tavern located on this plateau. A large building, which is difficult to call a finite one, did not give a very optimistic impression. Above the windows, someone using the oil paint smeared the word TABEPNA. It looked a little professional and looked like an abandoned building.
The profession of this 82-year-old Cretan is slowly falling into oblivion and his role is taken over by production lines in factories. Giorgos Chatziparaschos is one of the last producers of confectionery created on the basis of the hand-made filo pastry and its small plant can be visited in Rethymno, for which we strongly urge you.
