Chevrolet Matiz - A popular car of category A
Depending on the area of Crete, where you will be staying, the availability of a car rental company can be very different. In the case of smaller towns not yet contaminated with industrial tourism, this may be a bit more problematic. Of course, this does not change the fact that you can always use the booking via the Internet or by phone. However, it is worth remembering that in the case of reservations to a remote location, delivery of a car may involve additional costs. It may also happen that in the high season the rental company refuses to deliver the car to such locations. Generally, however, in most cases, renting a car in Crete is relatively easy and relatively cheap (especially if we compare the price lists of Greek rental companies with price lists from other countries).
Independent tourists can also count on car rental agencies present directly at the airports. In the arrivals hall there are representatives of such companies as Hertz or Avis.
Booking a vehicle via the Internet usually means unknown. A car from a given category is usually ordered, covering usually a specific group of cars of several brands located in a similar size and price category. This means that in the high season you are not guaranteed to receive exactly the vehicle you wanted to rent. For sure it will be a car from a given category that you choose.
Sometimes, in the high season, a situation may happen that at the time the booking begins, the rental company does not have the vehicle of the category you chose. In such cases, the substituted car may be of a higher class, which, however, does not entail additional charges.
In case you are resting in a typical tourist place on the northern coast of Crete, you will certainly be able to pick up a number of rentals directly on site. In most cases, price offers within a given town are quite similar to each other. Super attractive proposals should meet your side with increased attention and reserve, because they usually have a deviation in the insurance or quality and condition of the car.
One of the most important issues is that the insurance covers as wide a range of events and damage as possible. It is worth remembering that even the most comprehensive insurance does not absolve the user from the responsibility for the rented car. Glaring irresponsibility and recklessness will involve additional costs.
The client usually has to pay for the damages to the chassis or tires that may arise when driving on gravel roads. The risk of moving around them falls on your shoulders and wallets. Of course, we do not want to demonize driving on such roads, the more that we have even overcome quite long stretches of gravel, but it is worth being aware of such a limitation and sometimes we will definitely be able to cope with this type of route which we are going to drive. Generally, it's best to stick to the principle that we will not go where we would not go by our own car.
The second important issue when signing a contract is the lack of own contribution in the field of insurance. This is a very important point of the contract, which is easy to overlook. It may appear especially often in the case of affordable loans, because it is associated with a lower rate of insurance, which reduces the cost of renting a car.
Signing a car rental agreement with a self-risk insurance is associated with a specific (usually amount) complicity in the costs of car repair. This may mean that in case of cullet or other random event, all or part of the costs will be transferred to the person renting the car.
For example: if share is onhowever, the damage in the car will be priced at 250 €, the whole cost of the car repair will have to be covered by the customer. So, judge for yourself whether it is worth signing a contract with own contribution. In our opinion, it is not worth choosing such a risky step to save a relatively small amount. Sometimes the moment of inattention or slight oversight can be the reason for expensive damage.
Vacation time should not be a period in which we will be thinking about the "safety" of a rented car, the more so as random cases are unpredictable.
At the end, the most obvious principle, however, which is worth remembering. Renting a car must be carried out absolutely on the principle of signing a contract in which there are full regulations. You leave the rental car with keys for the car and a contract in hand.
The basic factor shaping the cost of renting a car is its category and brand. In principle, it is also more expensive to rent sports cars, convertibles and vehicles designated as off-road. The rental day for this type of vehicle may be several times greater than the day of rental of a typical compact car.
Another factor directly affecting the price is the length of the period for which you rent a car. The longer it will be, the price for a single day will be lower. When renting a car for more than 10 days, the fee per night may be more than half lower than the fee for a rental period of, for example, 2 days. Therefore, if you are determined to visit a lot, it is better to use one-time borrowing than to divide this period into two shorter ones.
A short rental period, on the order of one or two days, may result in a mileage record in the contract that may be traveled during this time. It is worth paying attention to whether you do not have such a limitation in the contract.
Of course, the cost of renting is also affected by the insurance coverage described earlier.
The second driver usually does not increase the fee for a rented car, but it must be included in the contract as a person authorized to drive the vehicle. It is worth remembering that putting the keys to the car to any other person is excluded from the scope of insurance.
Additional accessories such as child seats, navigation and similar items can be included in the price of the contract or involve additional costs. It's worth refining this before signing the contract. Rentals usually add a "free" map of the island, which must be treated more in the category of a less-useful gadget. If you're going to drive a lot, it's worth getting your own decent car map.
The car's return time is usually set at the time the car is rented. Most rentals also have a rule that the vehicle's tank must be filled to no less than at the time when you received the vehicle. Therefore, it is also worth checking this compliance when picking up the car at the rental company so as not to expose yourself to additional costs related to filling up the missing amount of fuel. Remember to check whether this information has been marked on the contract.
Before handing over the car, it's worth checking to see if there are any personal belongings in his cabin or boot. In the history of our trips to Greece, we had a case when the day before departure we returned the car with our documents inside.
Independent sightseeing of Crete is in our opinion the best form to get to know this island. However, whether you choose a car, scooter or motor is less important. We definitely recommend this way of tourism.

Only a few years ago, most of the road regulations were treated in Crete very slowly. Many of the offenses were not registered at all, and many of the issued mandates, by various connections were canceled in one way or another. For several years, however, one can notice a much more restrictive approach to the observance of traffic rules in Crete. In particular, this applies to speed control, fastening seat belts, carrying children in car seats and using mobile phones while driving.
The mountain roads in Crete require a hand from the driver. There are places where the road cuts into a mountain slope, and its boundary on one side is marked by a vertical wall with crumbling rocks, and on the other hand by a precipice falling down a steep slope. In most such places, energy-saving barriers to vehicles fall are the standard, but there are also places where dense concrete pillars are the only security measures.
