Today, Greeks celebrate Clean Monday ( Καθαρή Δευτέρα ), sometimes called Ash Monday or Lent Monday , because it marks the beginning of the 40-day fast. It is a moveable feast celebrated on the Monday of the seventh week preceding Orthodox Easter. This holiday is a public holiday in Greece and Cyprus and is also traditionally considered the beginning of the spring season.
This year's record-breaking lagana from the bakery in Nea Chora
The entire first week of Lent is often referred to as "Clean Week," and according to Greek customs, the house must be thoroughly cleaned during this week. However, the main purpose of this holiday is purification and spiritual transformation, mutual forgiveness, and beginning the fasting period with a clear conscience.
Whenever possible and weather permitting, Greeks spend this holiday outdoors flying kites. Meals with family and friends feature dishes based on Lenten ingredients, such as fresh seafood, lagana bread, and cooked vegetables. In some regions of Greece, one of the popular dishes served on Clean Monday is fasolada soup.
One of the traditions of Clean Monday is baking lagana bread, a staple of the Lenten table. This flat, oblong bread, sprinkled with sesame seeds, is made without leavening using flour and water.
Although many housewives still make their own bread, the vast majority of Greeks buy their lagana from local bakeries, which begin production the evening before Clean Monday. Although in larger cities, sales of this bread begin at night, no one is surprised by the enormous lines that form in the morning outside the best bakeries.
Despite the large amount of work and all-night preparations to make traditional lagans available in stores from the dawn of Clean Monday, there is no shortage of bakers who also prepare special lagans in record sizes.
The four-meter-long lagana of Nea Hora
This year, what is arguably the largest lagana in Crete was baked at Theoharis Dimitroulakis' Cretan Bakery in Nea Chora, Chania. The lagana he made measures 1.90 meters high, 4 meters wide, and weighs 70 kilograms. "We've been baking our giant lagana for over 25 years. It's something people crave and ask for, and for us, it's become a habit. People are impressed, take pictures, and look forward to it every year," Dimitroulakis said today.
These enormous baked goods are always displayed at the entrance to the bakery, and photos of them appear on news sites. Every year, Dimitroulakis distributes his lagana to those in need.
gość PiotrWie Jeździliśmy na Kretę od 2008r, bywały lata że byliśmy w kilku kawałkach w sumie czterdzieści kilka dni ( samoloty z Wrocławia latały w piątek wieczorem tak że można było polecieć po pracy, powrotem był w poniedziałek w nocy więc za 11 dni urlopu można było być 17 dni, jak się zaplanowało z jakimś świętem to można było być 2 x 17 dni i raz 10 dni) i z roku na rok było coraz więcej ludzi - nie tylko na plażach ale ... (...)
Czy wyspa jest w stanie pomieścić 15 mln turystów, zapewne tak. Pytanie moje: skąd będzie woda?! Jak już brakuje, tama na Aposelemis sucha, gdzie ścieki popłyną, gdzie będą składowane śmieci??? Smutne, że wyspa zamienia się na globalną destynację.. rozumiem, że pieniądze są ważne ale żeby dewastować naturalne tereny np.triopetra, plakias etc... przykro
Można próbować zrozumieć ludzi, którzy z tego żyją. Można też puścić ludzi na żywioł i nie zajmować się takimi głupotami, jak ofiary śmiertelne. Samaria nie jest szlakiem w 100% bezpiecznym (który szlak jest), to głęboki wąwóz, narażony na erozyjne osunięcia skał. Poza ty, to jest region aktywny sejsmicznie i dość kapryśny pogodowo.
Myślę, że tu nie ma miejsca na ustępstwa. (...)
gość PiotrWie Dziś po raz pierwszy ( a jeździmy dużo od 2008 roku i dużo chodzimy po szlakach) widzieliśmy w Grecji ekipę przygotowującą szlak do sezonu. Nie była to co prawda zbyt duża ekipa - dwie osoby z motyką, sekatorem i niewielką piłą ręczną - ale zawsze coś - na wyspach Kanaryjskich ekipa to pierwszy z kosą spalinową a zanim kilka osób zmiatających resztki na bok.
