Sfakian cake soon to be on UNESCO heritage list

If you have ever visited the Sfakia region in Crete, you may have had the opportunity to try Sfakian pita. Σφακιανής πίτας can also be found on tavern menus under the English name Sfakian pie. It is a type of flatbread the size of a pancake. Its characteristic feature is that it is kneaded with Mizithra cheese and after frying, drizzled with honey. Sfakian pita is characteristic only of the municipality of Sfakia and so far we have not encountered it anywhere else in Crete. Therefore, it is not a very recognizable dish on the island or particularly popular with tourists.

This situation has a chance to change, as the municipality of Sfakia has begun efforts to include the pie on the list of intangible cultural heritage. Work has now begun on the documentation that the municipality of Sfakia is to send to the Ministry of Culture along with the appropriate application. The activities have really gained momentum, and the Sfakians hope that by August next year they will have completed the preparation of the nomination documentation. This rush is also due to the launch of the “Crete Gastronomic Region of Crete for 2026” program planned for 2026, which would also be a good opportunity to promote the Sfakian pita as one of the symbols of Cretan tradition and gastronomy.

The documentation collected by the Sfakia commune should demonstrate the special characteristics of the Sfakian cake, which result from the high quality of the ingredients and the preparation process. An important part of this documentation should also be the oral accounts (testimonies) of people who demonstrate the uniqueness and timeless value of this humble cake for Cretan culinary culture.

It is worth noting that the Sfakia Pītā Festival has been celebrated for several years in the municipality of Sfakia, which is currently one of the most important and largest festivals in this region of Crete.
