On April 16 this year the decision of Mrs. Maria Kozyrakis, Secretary of the Decentralized Administration of Crete, was published in the official journal regarding the topic "Regulation of matters related to the island of Chrissi for 2024". It is worth keeping this document in mind, because this very serious-sounding decision contains a number of regulations that directly apply to tourist cruises to this small island.

At the beginning, it is worth emphasizing that last year's restrictions regarding direct entry to the island remain in place. In particular, from May 1 to October 31, 2024, visitors are prohibited from directly disembarking from any type of ship that is prohibited from coming to shore. Only designated beaches are allowed for tourists to relax. Access to the interior of the island, and in particular to the absolute protection zone (dunes with unique vegetation and cedar forest), is completely prohibited.
The previous decision to suspend the license for commercial activities on Pelegrina and Vougiou Mati beaches is also upheld. In both places, this year and next year, it will be prohibited to set up any beach infrastructure, including deckchairs and umbrellas.

The services of the Ministry of the Environment and the local forest district clearly announce that they will monitor compliance with these regulations. Detected and confirmed violations will result in the imposition of appropriate sanctions, i.e. in the case of tourists, this will involve paying an appropriate fine. It is worth keeping this in mind when sailing to this island.
The main reason for the bans introduced is that the increasing degradation of the natural environment of this small island has been observed for a long time. Unfortunately, one of the main causes of this phenomenon was intensive tourism. During the peak holiday season, Chrissi was literally trampled to death day after day. Up to 200,000 people entered the island during the year. people. If you are interested in this topic, please read one of our previous news items below:
