Today, in the morning, Greeks celebrate Tsiknopempti , the equivalent of the Polish Fat Thursday. While everyone eats donuts during Fat Thursday in Poland, grilled meat reigns supreme during Tsiknopempti in Greece. Or rather, large amounts of grilled meat. Tsiknopempti falls at the end of Carnival, 11 days before Clean Monday. Today in Chania, from the morning the inhabitants of the city set up barbecues right on the streets and started cooking meat. The city streets quickly filled with the characteristic smoke, and souvlaki, paidakia, sausages, steaks and chicken were grilling on the grills.

According to Greek Orthodox tradition, people who wait for forty days of fasting before Easter can eat as much meat as they want on this particular Thursday and can party as long as they have enough strength. This tradition is, of course, a good opportunity for meetings with family or friends, especially since in many towns there are barbecues on the main squares where meat is roasted. On this day, from early afternoon, you can feel the specific smoke that is produced during barbecuing in the air. Today's holiday comes from its name. The word Tsikna means the smell of grilled meat, pémpti means Thursday. Should the name of the holiday be understood as Smoky Thursday?
In the evening, when people sit down at tables full of food, you can hear music everywhere, sometimes singing and loud conversations. Taverns prepare a special menu on this day, and one of the most popular dishes is souvlaki and paidakia , i.e. grilled lamb ribs. In some areas of Greece, in addition to grilled meats, nettle cake ( Πίτα με τσουκνίδες ) is also baked.
The origins of this custom are probably to be found in ancient rites in honor of Bacchus. They have survived to this day but with some modifications. Various parades are organized during the last week of carnival. People dress up and go out into the streets to take part in dancing and singing.
