A few days ago, some Cretan media drew attention to the official visit of the German ambassador to Crete. As it turns out, the reason for the politician's official visits to the island is the constantly growing German community. Approximately 3,000 German citizens live permanently in the Heraklion regional unit alone, but unfortunately there is currently no data for the entire island.
So far, the most common people who moved to the island were German retirees who bought old, run-down buildings and carried out general renovations. This trend has so far been most visible in the eastern part of Crete, in the prefectures of Heraklion and Lassithi. An example is the village of Agios Ioannis near Ierapetra, which is dominated by German-speaking inhabitants. Nowadays, this trend has started to spread across the island. Recently, interest in moving permanently has become more and more common among young people of working age.
The possibility of remote work on a larger scale appeared during the pandemic, which resulted in the emergence of the so-called digital nomads. These people usually have signed employment contracts with employers in their home countries, but they do not have to work in a specific place. Therefore, they chose Crete as the ideal place to live. What attracts digital nomads apart from good weather? Not without significance are the much lower costs of living than those that you have to pay when living in large European cities in Central or Western Europe. This makes the new lifestyle in the Mediterranean region more and more attractive to young people.
