We are all used to visiting wineries and olive oil factories in Greece. A trip to one of such places is a valuable experience thanks to which you can learn about the production process of local specialties. And a trip combined with the opportunity to taste and buy wine or olive oil directly from the producer is a combination of pleasure and benefits.
People who like to get to know Greece from this side will certainly be interested in the new plans of the Greek Ministry of Tourism. This office announced this week that it is starting certification procedures for cheese factories that want to start this type of activity aimed at tourists. Making cheese factories available to visitors is another step towards linking production and agriculture with the tourist experience.
Cheese factories open to visitors are to receive a special certificate indicating that they comply with certain standards for business operations in Greece. The Visitable Cheese Factory certificate will be the equivalent of labels awarded to wineries, breweries and olive oil presses.
These labels are to be issued by regional tourist services operating under the aegis of the Ministry of Tourism. Factories with the Visitable Cheese Factory certificate will be able to conduct tastings, organize presentations and other events, as well as distribute information materials promoting the consumption of Greek cheeses. This activity aims to strengthen the culinary identity of Greece and disseminate knowledge about products with a protected designation of origin and products with a protected geographical indication.
To qualify for the program, cheese-producing factories will have to meet several conditions, including: having a reception and waiting room for guests. This type of place will also have to have a special zone equipped for tasting and a promotion and sales point.
