The Nida Plateau, located at an altitude of 1,400 meters above sea level in the Idai Mountains, is one of the largest in Crete. A picturesque asphalt road leads to the plateau, starting from the village of Anogia. This place is mainly used as a pasture for sheep. Due to its high altitude location, no crops are grown on the plateau.
On the Nida plateau there is the Ida cave, where the mythical Zeus is said to have been raised. Currently, however, due to the works being carried out, the cave is temporarily unavailable to visitors. From Nida you can also take a hiking trail to the highest peak of Crete, Timios Stavros. Another section of the European path also leads to the Kamares Cave (also known as Kamaraiko), one of the most important cult caves of the Minoan era on the island.
There is also an unusual large stone sculpture on the eastern border of the plateau called the Peace Rebel . It was made in 1990 by the German sculptor Karina Reck as a symbolic apology for the atrocities and massacres of the local population committed by the Nazis during the war. This large stone angel was also intended to commemorate the struggle of the Cretan resistance. The sculpture is 30 meters long and 10 meters wide and was built of stones that the Cretans placed on the plateau during the war to prevent German planes from landing. Even though from a bird's eye view the sculpture looks like an angel, its wings are nothing more than symbolic blood flowing from a warrior. However, the actual shape of the sculpture is visible only from a certain height. You can also see this sculpture in today's video by Giannis Psaroudakis.
