Paligremnos, the famous rock rising in the village of Plakias , has today been declared an area of outstanding natural beauty and has been declared a protected natural monument. The Regional Council of the Department of Environment and Spatial Planning of the Region of Crete issued a positive recommendation to the Ministry to take further official decisions regarding the creation of a protected area.
This decision was made unanimously based on a study conducted by the Natural History Museum of Crete, which assessed the characteristics of the rock, pointing to the existence of three active tectonic faults, which preclude the possibility of erecting any structures on the rock. In addition, attention was drawn to the fact that in winter it is also a wetland, which becomes a habitat for many species of birds.
Today's meeting was attended by a great many people who have been involved in this long struggle to preserve the rock of Paligremnos intact. And although, as it was emphasized, the building permits for the hotel complex were issued in accordance with the applicable law, today's decisions will probably end this matter for good. It was also emphasized that the investor was aware that it was a unique area, but had no information that this place was located over active tectonic faults.
We would like to remind you that the battle for Paligremnos has been going on for several years, when an investor appeared who wanted to build a hotel complex on top of the rock. The first decisions and actions regarding this dubious investment aroused strong protests from both the inhabitants of Plakias and the scientific community. This resulted in suspension of work for several years. Unfortunately, in May last year, the topic of the unfortunate investment returned. In just a few days, construction was suddenly launched. Unfortunately, heavy equipment managed to ruin a fragment of the area above the cliff in a short time. This aroused huge opposition and the case gained publicity again on both local news portals and social media. Today, local politicians explained their decisions regarding the issuing of permits by staff shortages and mistakes. Fortunately, thanks to the activity of the local community, it turned out that, in the words of Mr. Babis Fassoulas from the Natural History Museum in Crete: "not everything is for sale".
