Last Sunday, October 30, one of the most interesting runs that are regularly organized in Crete took place. We mean Sfakia Vertical Run, which has already entered the calendar of running events for good. Exceptionally, it was not organized during the pandemic, but now it has been returned to the event for the eighth time.

180 participants of the race came by ferry from Chora Sfakion to Loutro and then started running uphill to the village of Annopoli, where the finish of the race was. The route is "only" 4.5 km long, but the height difference of 690 meters that must be overcome during this run requires you to look at this challenge completely differently.
In yesterday's race, Fotis Matsigos was the first to finish the race, covering the distance in 37 minutes and 7 seconds. The second rider, Antonis Kostakis finished the race just 20 seconds later (00:37:27), the third one was Antonis Protopapadakis (00:38:23).

The winner among women was Eleni Kallitsaki (00:50:59), the second was Kalliopi Logothetis (00:52:06), the third Athina Papadaki crossed the finish line with the time 00:54:25.
It is also worth noting that only one competitor did not finish this race.
At the same time, this weekend on October 29, the Sfakia Sky Marathon was organized for the second time. This race was attended by 51 riders who also started in Loutro, but their finish was 43 km away. The total elevation that the competitors have to overcome during the marathon is 3000 meters. This route is special because it starts at sea level in Loutro, but one of the points of the run is Pachnes, the highest peak of the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) located at an altitude of 2453 m. total time 5:11:57. The fastest among women was Eleni Haziraki, who crossed the finish line with a time of 06:28:31.

This event was organized in Crete for the second time. Its inauguration took place in 2019, after which, due to severe restrictions related to the coronavirus, its organization was also suspended. During this year's race, two additional challenges were organized. The first Sea to Summit was associated with the shortest travel time between Loutro and the summit of Mount Pachnes. The second Bring the Cheese Challenge was to run to the finish line with a 3 kg disc of Gravier cheese, which the competitor took on the 23rd kilometer of the marathon route. This cheese was made using a traditional method and matured in the heart of the White Mountains. The original challenge was dedicated to the anonymous shepherds of the Sfakia region who built paths in the White Mountains and their life and work are related to this region.
