After the catastrophic fires that have broken out in various places in Greece for the last two weeks, we receive a lot of inquiries about the current fire situation in Crete.
The extreme heat wave that hit Greece at the end of July increased the risk of fire in Crete to such an extent that, for safety reasons, the authorities decided to close popular gorges, hiking trails and roads in the area of the White Mountains, forest areas and Natura areas. The most crowded Samaria Gorge has remained closed since July 31, an unprecedented event.
In Crete, however, so far, apart from local, relatively small fires, it was possible to avoid very dangerous situations that would get out of hand. The introduced security measures, the services put on alert and the vigilance of people allowed for quick reactions. This was the case even a few days ago in the vicinity of Heraklion, Kissamos or even this afternoon near the construction of the airport in Kastelli.
At present, the degree of fire risk in Crete has slightly decreased, so it can be hoped that the access bans to sensitive areas, which are in force until Friday, August 13, will not be extended for the following days. Let's also hope that nothing unforeseen will happen either.
At the same time, the University of Creta, in cooperation with the region of Crete, constantly monitors air pollution with PM 2.5 dust from fires in Greece. Temporarily, an increased concentration of these pollutants was noted, but a change in the wind direction resulted in their dispersion.
At the same time, to those readers who want to be up to date with a fire hazard, we would like to remind you that our website still has a Fire Hazard Map page where you can check the forecasts for each day. This map is updated every day and provides the estimated state of emergency for the next day.
At the moment, however, the fight against fires is still ongoing in various parts of Greece. In some areas, the situation is still critical. Greek services are supported by firefighters from many other European countries. The Greek authorities have announced that they will allocate € 500 million to help those who have lost their homes and belongings in the fires. More than EUR 16 billion is to be invested from now until 2027 to support Greece's natural environment and fight climate change. EUR 224 million will be invested in reforesting the burnt areas.
