Booking.com is a very popular online booking service between travelers and hotels and guesthouses. This website is such a well-known and important medium that in many hotels at the reception desk you can see information about the rating of a given facility on this website. Of course, these ratings are issued by travelers who share their observations and opinions about their stay in a given place.
This time, however, booking.com decided to conduct a survey among its users on the future of tourism. Its results were discussed at an online conference on January 25-26. The main theme, of course, was the impact of the pandemic on travel trends. Booking analyzed survey data from 20,000 travelers from 28 global markets that identified some key trends in future travel choices.
62% of travelers say they will pay more attention to prices when planning a trip. This is not surprising, because in times of crisis we spend money more carefully.
Half of the respondents want to return to places they have been before because they know them. Slightly less, 43% of people, plan to explore new places, but those located in their country and even the nearby region. This is basically a continuation of the trend that emerged last year. In 2020, a large proportion of people explored places located in their countries, and even close to their place of residence. This trend was called microtourism and, as experts point out, it will become more and more popular in the near future.
Escapism is an escape from the problems of everyday life into a world of dreams. As it turns out, it has now become a kind of trend, because over a third of respondents (38%) admit that they look for potential travel destinations at least once a week "for sports", and 36% regularly chat with family or friends about travel . The inability to travel in real terms probably causes people to start traveling "with a finger on the map".
Health and safety has become the most noticeable trend in this survey. As many as 75% of respondents declare that they prefer places with available antibacterial and disinfecting agents. However, care for safety does not end with disinfection, because as many as 70% of people say that they will book accommodation only if it meets the current sanitary and health rules. Owners of hotels and guesthouses will undoubtedly have to face this preference.
More than half of travelers (53%) want to travel in a more environmentally sustainable way in the future, and 69% expect the tourism industry to offer such sustainable travel options. Such expectations appeared already in the pre-Covid era, but now they have clearly grown stronger.
Remote work is an opportunity for some people to move to their dream place for a long time and from there to work to enjoy free time in a place of their choice after work. More than a third of travelers (37%) admit that they considered such longer bookings combined with the intention to work remotely. Some of the respondents declare extending their business trips to combine them with leisure. It is anticipated that digital nomads and remote workers will make up a large proportion of the short-term rental market.
The need to wear onerous masks and various prohibitions on movement and distance, mean that more than two-thirds of future travelers will want to appreciate simple experiences such as spending time outdoors or with their family. 56% want to look for rural atmosphere and little-beaten paths. We understand this trend perfectly and you probably also.
Other key conclusions discussed at the conference were the preference for short-distance travel. Surveys show that Europeans are currently not very interested in traveling outside Europe. More travelers declare choosing the short-term rental option because it is perceived as safer and more affordable. The respondents also indicate greater privacy, flexibility of such offer, availability of high-speed internet, cleanliness and the possibility of using such areas as gardens and terraces.
The survey results clearly showed that lockdowns and other restrictions have an impact on our travel preferences. The limitation in travel, which we have been dealing with for almost a year, meant that 42% of respondents declare that they want to travel even more in the future in order to make up for lost 2020. At the same time, 62% admit that they now appreciate traveling more than before the pandemic. The freedom to travel before 2020 seemed obvious and normal, now it feels like a luxury.
Surveys also showed a growing interest in short-term rental housing.
