Difficult situation KTEL Heraklion-Lassithi

The KTEL bus service serving the Heraklion-Lassithi area is in an increasingly difficult financial condition. This situation is mainly due to the small number of tourists and also the fact that a large part of hotels and other enterprises work on the common half of the whistle. The president of KTEL, Manolis Chachlioutis, also notes that the residents themselves are trying to limit their travels. All this means that the decrease in the number of passengers that is currently recorded was about 85% compared to the same period in previous years. The situation was even worse during the period of strict quarantine, when the number of passengers on lines between cities dropped by about 99%.

Currently, students are most often used by KTEL buses. They constitute a significant part of passengers who did not resign from traveling by bus. Let's not fool ourselves - students are loyal customers not because of their special passion for travel, but only because they simply need to travel to school. It should not be surprising, then, that the president of KTEL looks with great concern at the future. Particularly worrying is the period after July 26, when young people finish their education this school year.

Manolis Chachlioutis emphasizes that poor tourism does not give hope for improvement. From the conversations he has with hotel owners, it is clear that the majority of them do not exceed 30% of accommodation capacity. What's more, he believes that even if "tourists come to Crete, most of them will stay in hotels for fear of coronavirus."

It should not come as a surprise, then, that among the possible solutions there are even ideas to definitely cut the network of intercity bus connections. Of course, this is the last resort, which would certainly arouse a lot of controversy. However, as announced by Manolis Chachlioutis, no actions will be taken in this direction. However, the President of KTEL announced that passenger traffic will be monitored in detail and that July 10 will be indicated as the key date affecting possible decisions on cuts in the route network.

Time will tell if there will be a need to reach for such radical solutions. We hope that thanks to local media it will be possible to publicize this matter and it will be noticed by the central authorities, because, as the president of KTEL notes, they too "are asking for help. As in the case of ferry tickets, the introduction of a ticket subsidy is also required for bus services. "

Jako pewne uzupełnienie tego newsa musimy jeszcze wspomnieć o tym, że problemy z finansami dotyczą nie tylko KTEL'a z rejonu wschodniej Krety, ale również przewoźników w innych rejonach wyspy. Dziś gmina Kandanos-Selino poinformowała o tym, że ograniczona została liczba przejazdów autobusów KTEL kursujących na trasie Chania - Paleochora. Sytuacja ta oczywiście budzi bardzo duży niepokój lokalnych władz, które zauważają to jako znaczne ograniczenie możliwości przemieszczania się osób starszych oraz tych, które nie dysponują własnymi samochodami. Dosyć istotne jest również to, że w weekendy autobusy z i do Paleochory nie kursują wcale. Zdaniem lokalnych władz może to spowodować, że w oczach wielu turystów Paleochora będzie postrzegana jako mało atrakcyjna miejscowość.
