Today we have for you further information related to new investments to be implemented in Plakias . And although we recently wrote to you about the quite controversial idea of creating a hotel complex, the construction of which was planned in Plakias in the area of the characteristic Gonates cliff, this news will have a much more positive impact. The investments that we want to mention will relate to changes carried out within the network of local roads and pedestrian routes. One of the most important elements of this investment is the construction of the small Plakias bypass, which will allow the transit of car traffic outside this town.
This will definitely have a positive impact on the nature of the coastal part of Plakias. Reduced car traffic passing through this part of the village will emphasize the advantages of the local promenade, which according to assumptions will also be rebuilt. The creation of bicycle paths will also be quite new in Crete. As part of the work performed, actions will also be taken to increase the accessibility of the beach and promenade for people with disabilities.
The planned project also provides for a partial modernization of the road leading to Souda located nearby. The scope of work includes activities such as the construction of retaining walls, construction of protective fences, increasing the width to an average of 8m, as well as adding lighting along the entire length obtaining energy from photovoltaic systems. People who love walking should be especially pleased that the list also includes the construction of a pavement over 2 km long.
The total budget for all these activities is estimated at over € 3.5 million. Much of it is financed from funds provided by the authorities of the Crete region. The works are scheduled to start in September this year.
For our part, we only hope that such strong changes introduced in Plakias will not cause that this place will change its sleepy and relaxing character.
