For many people, sun, beach, and blue sea are essential conditions for a successful vacation. However, if you're planning to swim in the sea, it's worth paying attention to the water quality and purity to ensure your swimming holiday doesn't end in a dermatological emergency.
The European Environment Agency (EEA) has just published its latest report summarizing bathing water quality in 2025. A staggering 97.1%, or 1,684 of 1,734 monitored Greek bathing sites, were classified as excellent, earning Greece second place in the European Union. Cyprus proved unrivaled, boasting a 100% score. Bulgaria came third, with 96.9% of its bathing sites rated as excellent.
Two facts are also worth highlighting: first, no bathing site in Greece has been classified as poor. Second, the 97.1% score means that Greece significantly exceeds the EU average, which is 85% for top-tier bathing sites.
An analysis of EEA data shows Greece returning to the top of the list of countries with the cleanest bathing areas. After a temporary drop to fourth place in 2023, Greece returned to the top three in 2024, and in the latest ranking, it appears to have climbed even higher.
The EEA assessment covered more than 22,200 bathing sites across Europe, including coastal beaches, rivers, and lakes. Coastal waters generally continue to perform better than inland bathing sites, with 88% of EU coastal waters rated excellent, compared with 78% of inland waters.

Across the European Union, 85% of bathing sites were rated "excellent," and 96% met at least minimum quality standards. This stable and high score is the result of years of investment in wastewater infrastructure and water management systems, as well as the implementation of the EU Bathing Water Directive. While these statistics may be encouraging, the EEA also tempers sentiment, pointing to the need for further action in the face of ongoing climate change and increasing water pollution.
This report also includes a look at which countries have poor water quality. It's worth keeping this in mind when choosing a vacation destination. Albania ranked last, with only 16.8% of its bathing areas classified as top quality. Estonia came second from the bottom, with 56.9% of its bathing areas being of excellent quality. Third from the bottom were bathing areas in Poland, where only 58.7% of its bathing areas were classified as top quality.
