If you were hoping to start next year's Crete vacation by landing at the new airport in Kastelli, we have a dose of hard reality for you. It seems that in the entire project of building a new airport, the opening date is the parameter with the greatest flexibility.

Arrivals and departures to Crete - for now still mainly to the old airport in Heraklion, visible in the photo
The starting point for the current promises was February 2020. Then, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, with typical political optimism, announced that within five years, Crete would have a modern airport that would meet its current needs. Today, in 2026, we know that these promises were not kept, and the airport's launch date has just been postponed once again.
Last Friday, January 30, during a visit to the construction site, the Prime Minister signed a contract for the installation of air navigation systems. This document defines the framework for the international tender for the delivery and commissioning of equipment necessary for the facility's subsequent certification. At the same time, almost in passing, the Prime Minister announced another deadline, which is to take place in... 2028. Thus, the new deadline was loosely woven into the narrative of success, becoming the government's new, official goal.
Interestingly, the word "delay" doesn't even exist in the official message. Instead, it's a narrative about the "complexity of the project" and "tightened safety requirements." Specific numbers are also provided – work is said to be 67 percent complete. However, if you compare today's announcements with those from previous years, a strategy of "small steps" emerges. The time horizon has systematically shifted: from 2025 to 2026, then to 2027, and now to 2028. The facts are inexorable: the initial promises have fallen short of reality by at least three years.

The infrastructure leading to the airport has been under construction for many years.
For passengers, this juggling of dates has a very specific and uncomfortable dimension. The current Nikos Kazantzakis Airport in Heraklion, whose roots date back to 1937, has for years occupied the bottom of European rankings of such destinations. The facility, which served a record 10 million passengers in 2025, has long been operating at its limits. However, outdated infrastructure and legendary crowds will remain a fixture of Cretan holidays for at least the next few seasons.
The new airport in Kastelli is expected to accommodate up to 15 million passengers annually, and its 3.8-kilometer runway will accommodate the world's largest aircraft. However, for now, the relatively certainty of this investment remains that we will still have to wait for the luxury of modernity. The question is whether 2028 is truly the final date or just another point in a very moving schedule. For now, all we can do is be patient and… prepare for the traditional queues in Heraklion.
