The Ephorate of Antiquities in Heraklion has announced the temporary closure of the archaeological site of Malia , home to the ruins of the third-largest Minoan palace in Crete . The site will be inaccessible to tourists from October 15 to December 31, 2025.
The decision to suspend tourist traffic for over two months is dictated by the need to carry out essential flood protection work, which, for safety reasons, requires the facility to be closed. The investment is being implemented as part of a project financed by the EU Recovery and Resilience Fund.
The Palace of Malia, located about 40 kilometers east of Heraklion, is one of the most important monuments of Minoan culture. Those planning to visit this site during the autumn/winter period will therefore have to change their plans. It's worth remembering, however, that the most valuable artifacts discovered at the palace, including the famous gold bee pendant, can still be seen on permanent display at the Heraklion Archaeological Museum.
For detailed information on the ongoing work, the Ephorate of Antiquities in Heraklion provides the following telephone number: 2897031597.
