Crete once again tops the list, this time in a rather unusual and—hopefully—exceptionally positive category. According to the latest data published by the Greek association ARCHELON (Association for the Conservation of Sea Turtles), Crete holds the absolute record in the Aegean Sea for the number of sporadic nesting incidents of Caretta caretta turtles .
309 additional sockets
In a report analyzing data spanning nearly four decades (1984-2024), Crete ranked first, recording 309 incidents of egg-laying on beaches not subject to continuous, systematic monitoring. This represents more than half of the 577 sporadic nesting incidents recorded in the Aegean region.
It seems that turtles readily succumb to the island's charms, choosing wilder and more secluded beaches to nest on. Perhaps this statistical advantage is simply due to the warmer waters around Crete. So even science confirms that Crete is an exceptionally hot destination, and not just for tourists.
ARCHELON: Human Support for Turtles
The ARCHELON organization is also behind this "turtle" success. Founded in 1983, the Sea Turtle Conservation Association is now a pillar of Greek ecology. Their mission is not only to ensure that nesting sites (like those in Rethymnon, Chania, or Messara Bay in Crete) don't turn into promenades for late-night revelers, but also to research, educate, and rescue injured animals.
If you've ever seen a group of young, tanned people in Crete, often traveling in off-road vehicles, measuring their tracks in the sand at dawn and fencing off a stretch of beach, they were most likely ARCHELON volunteers. It is on their shoulders that rests the difficult responsibility of being a link between civilization and nature. Every year, hundreds of volunteers from around the world participate in ARCHELON projects. They do a tremendous job:
They are responsible for systematic monitoring and for coordinating the so-called " Citizen Science" project, which proved crucial in finding the 309 sporadic nests in Crete.

Smartphones in the service of turtles
It's somewhat ironic that in the age of mass tourism, it's the insight of a wandering beachgoer—armed with a GPS-enabled smartphone—that proves to be the key to protecting a dying species. As it turns out, this technology is also used to save nature, not just for selfies with a frappe.
In practice, this means that thousands of watchful eyes—both locals and tourists—have become an additional early warning system. Any additional footprints in the sand left by a turtle's nocturnal escapade are quickly reported to ARCHELON.
If you are also on less frequented beaches and see a turtle laying eggs or unusual, wide tracks in the sand, immediately keep your distance, do not disturb the nest area and report this fact to ARCHELON.
Caretta caretta turtles have chosen Crete, among other places, for nesting. It is our duty to respect their decision so that these extraordinary animals survive for future generations. ARCHELON's slogan, "We can all live together," is very fitting.
