One of the Cretan portals has recently described unfair practices used by the owners of parking lots located on the famous Elafonissi beach.
Unfair practices were used by one of the parking lots located at the top of the Google Maps screenshot

More than 2 years ago, the Kissamos municipal council decided to implement regulations to protect the Elafonissi beach area. Specifically, it was about closing the former wild parking lot located right next to the beach, because this area actually belonged to a protected ecological zone. In a well-understood concern for the natural environment, the municipal authorities banned parking cars in this place, and from then on, tourists had to leave their cars along the asphalt road leading to Elafonissi. The situation was quickly exploited by enterprising businessmen, and private parking lots began to be built along the access road.
So what went wrong? A Rethymno resident who went to the famous pink sand beach a few days ago noticed how employees of private parking lots located farthest from the beach, dressed in reflective vests imitating law enforcement, stopped cars heading to Elafonissi. In this way, behaving very aggressively, they forced drivers to park their cars in parking lots indicated by them, even about a kilometer away from the beach. Let us add that the parking fee in this place is higher (5€) than in parking lots located closer to the beach (3€). The whole situation was recorded on recordings and then published online on the Zarpanews.gr portal. Many negative comments also appeared in the reviews section on Google Maps.
"I went to Elafonisi with my wife and what I saw is indescribable. I arrived and found a parking lot, I saw a man in the middle of the road who told us that the further road was closed, forcing us to park there," the witness says. "The distance to the beach is long and we had to walk there. Walking to the beach I realized that the rest of the parking lots were not only open, but also empty. I understood that the owners of those parking lots were using dishonest methods to find customers. Of course I took the car and parked further away."
The man who told the story works in the tourism industry in his region and is outraged by the situation. He also spoke to residents of the Elafonisi area later, who said it was a common tactic. Although they were concerned, local police have not yet responded to the parking touts. The situation is also irritating tourists who come to the area.
After the articles and videos were published, Kissmos police conducted an inspection and arrested the owner of the parking lot and the tout, and the case is reportedly also being investigated by the prosecutor's office. We hope that such drastic measures will definitely discourage other parking lot owners from using similar practices.
