Interesting data can be found in the latest edition of INSETE, published by the Greek Tourism Confederation. This year, the number of people who chose to get to Greece by land has increased significantly. For obvious reasons, the data analyzed only covers the period from January to August 2024, but the increase is still impressive. In the first eight months, 8.8 million international road arrivals were recorded, which is a 14 percent increase compared to the same period last year.
The largest number of arrivals, as many as 2.5 million, was recorded in August, the peak of the tourist season. Compared to 2023, 315,000 more people entered Greece, which translates to a 14.5% increase. The month in which the largest percentage increase in the number of arriving guests was recorded was May. Compared to May 2023, as many as 37.7% more tourists arrived in Greece by land, which translates to 770,000 arrivals.
The busiest border crossings in 2024 were Promahonas on the border with Bulgaria and Evzoni on the border with North Macedonia, where 2.3 million and 1.9 million entries were recorded, respectively, since the beginning of the year.
The most significant percentage increase in arrivals was recorded at the Kiprinos checkpoint on the Greece-Turkey border, where 149,000 vehicles entered – 98,000 more than in the first eight months of 2023 – representing an increase of a whopping 190.9%.
First place is occupied by Bulgaria, with a total of 4 million arrivals and almost 18% growth compared to the previous year. Second place was taken by North Macedonia with 2.6 million arrivals and over 9% growth. Third place was secured by Albania (1.2 million guests), and fourth place was taken by Turkey, from which one million guests arrived by land, but the increase in the number of road arrivals from this direction is impressive and amounts to almost 33%.
These increases are probably primarily due to the increasingly high prices of airline tickets. The pandemic, inflation, and higher costs of aviation fuel have significantly increased prices at carriers, so more and more people are deciding to travel by their own car. Although the trip is longer, if properly planned, it will allow you to visit many interesting places in Greece on the way to your destination. Additionally, because you travel to your vacation by your own car, you do not have to incur the increasing costs of renting a car on site. This is especially important when you plan to do a lot of sightseeing.
This large increase in road traffic has also led many businesses and tourism organisations to ask the Greek government to improve the infrastructure at border crossings and allocate additional staff to enable faster and more efficient entry for travellers.

Wstępnie myślimy o tym, by w przyszłym roku majowy wyjazd zrealizować samochodem a wrześniowy - samolotem. Na marzec już mamy bilety - zresztą na Gran Canarię samochodem to byłby sens chyba dopiero na całą zimę.
