Greeks start the day by drinking a cup of coffee and later in the day they drink more. This pleasant ritual that is part of everyday life in Greece and is responsible for quite a large annual consumption. In Greece, approximately 40,000 are consumed annually. tons of coffee and this number is still growing. Today, however, for people who like to enjoy a black drink in cafes, coffee had a decidedly "bitter" taste. On July 1, 2024, the VAT rate on coffee in Greece increased again to 24%. A similar increase also applies to tea, cocoa and other drinks.
According to many people, VAT increases will have a negative impact on the condition of traditional coffee bars
For the last four years, VAT on these drinks has been reduced to 13%. However, this situation has changed and today's 11% VAT increase means that elinikos kafes, which until yesterday cost €2.50, now costs close to €2.8. For an espresso freddo that cost €3.50 yesterday, today it cost about €4.
Interestingly, however, the increase in VAT applies only to coffee served on-site in the cafe. The VAT rate for takeaway or delivery coffee remained unchanged.
The increase in the VAT rate on coffee served on site is widely commented on by the catering industry, which is still feeling the effects of the pandemic.
Additionally, entrepreneurs must cope with large increases in international coffee prices. Data shows that market prices for Robusta coffee varieties have reached a 45-year high, while the price of Arabica coffee has increased by 50% from January 2024 to May. If coffee prices remain at such a high level, it can be expected that the prices of coffee served in cafeterias will be even higher in autumn. Cafes will then use up their supplies of coffee purchased at lower prices. It is already predicted that the consumption of "on-site" coffee in taverns and cafeterias will decline even further, which will have a negative impact on the catering industry. In recent years, the proportion of coffee consumption at home and away from home has reversed. Currently, Greeks drink coffee more often at home (60%) than outside (40%). The current tax increases are unlikely to stop this negative trend.
