As announced, a heat wave has arrived over Crete. Today the maximum temperature in the Chania region exceeded 39 degrees. 14 of the 67 weather stations on the island showed temperatures above 37 degrees today. On Wednesday, June 12 and Thursday, June 13, it will be even hotter. Local maximum temperatures are expected to range from 40 to 42 degrees Celsius, while minimum temperatures will range from 27 to 29 degrees Celsius.
Based on the above forecasts, it was decided to close the trail leading through the Samaria Gorge to visitors for 3 days.
Mules in Samaria help transport the wounded and various items
The gorge will be closed from Wednesday, June 12 to Friday, June 14 inclusive. Both entrances will be closed, both from the Xyloskalo side and the southern entrance from Agia Roumeli. The Organization for the Natural Environment and Climate Change, which made this decision, justifies it not only with the need to protect visitors and employees of the gorge from the effects of heat. The organization also takes into account the need to protect mules and horses working in the gorge. These animals not only help in transporting injured and injured people from the gorge area, but are also used to carry various items. We are even more pleased with this argument and the recognition of the need to protect their health.
Unfortunately, the heatwave also increases the risk of wildfires on the island. Tomorrow, fire danger level 3 will apply throughout Crete.
