The Archaeological Museum in Heraklion is one of the greatest tourist attractions in Crete, attracting thousands of visitors every year. It is also one of the most important museums in all of Greece, which until now was open every day from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., just like 32 other important museums and archaeological sites throughout Greece. Currently, however, for some time there has been considerable confusion regarding the opening hours of this facility, as a result of which long queues of people waiting to enter are forming in front of the museum. Unfortunately, many tourists did not know about the shorter opening hours of the facility and after reaching Heraklion , they realized that they had traveled many kilometers for nothing.
In mid-May, the Museum announced changed and much shorter opening hours via social media. According to the information posted on May 15, in the period from May 15, 2024 to December 14, 2024, the museum was to operate during its current opening hours, i.e. from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. only two days a week. On the remaining days, sightseeing was to be possible only until 3 p.m.
This incomprehensible decision caused an avalanche of criticism both on social media and from nervous tourists who did not manage to visit this facility. There were probably some problems with filling positions behind these decisions.
Fortunately, today the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion announced further changes in the opening hours of the facility for visitors.
From Monday, May 27 to October 31, 2024, visiting the museum will be possible during the following hours:
Please note that until Monday, May 27, i.e. for the next 4 days, the museum will be open with reduced hours specified in the previous announcement:
Therefore, if you are planning a visit to this place in the next four days, be sure to take this restriction into account. Please share this information whenever possible.
Additionally, the Museum also informs that some rooms are closed to visitors. This applies, among others, to the rooms located on the 1st floor, excluding the Gallery of Minoan Frescoes.

Muzeum posiada największe na świecie zbiory kultury minojskiej. Spędziłem w nim kilka godzin, a i tak miałem niedosyt.
