This week, the "Minoas 2024" exercise was carried out in Crete to prepare for the earthquake and its consequences. Nearly 100,000 people took part in the event, which lasted from Monday to Wednesday, including not only relevant services and volunteers, but even residents of the island, including students from all schools. As part of the training, evacuations were carried out from hotels, companies, houses and public buildings.

The exercise was organized by the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, the Anti-Seismic Planning and Protection Organization and the Krey Region to develop coordination of joint actions during a major seismic event and the accompanying geodynamic phenomena.
Unfortunately, during the anti-seismic exercises conducted in the Samaria Gorge , the people involved had to deal with the real situation. While carrying out an exercise scenario involving landslides and people being trapped, one of the volunteers suffered a heart attack.
Crete is located in a seismically active area, so earthquakes are recorded here very often and are nothing special. Usually, the tremors are so weak that the island's inhabitants practically do not notice them. Unfortunately, however, there are also earthquakes with larger amplitudes, which contribute to more serious material losses. The last two most serious earthquakes occurred in the fall of 2021. The strength of the main shock was estimated at 6.3 on the Richter scale, followed by more than a hundred aftershocks. During the tremors, buildings in several villages were destroyed and one person was killed.

Unfortunately, even the weaker shocks that occur most often can have serious consequences. Last year, after the earthquake in the Samaria Gorge, a serious rockslide occurred, which resulted in a very serious accident for a tourist who was in the gorge at the time. The remaining people on the trail had to be evacuated immediately.
A few weeks ago, following seismic activity, a huge rockslide occurred in the Kotsifou Gorge. Huge loose rock fragments fell straight onto the road leading through the gorge, completely destroying it. Fortunately, no one was passing by at that time. In January this year, a similar phenomenon occurred in the Kourtaliotiko gorge , where rocks fell on a car, partially destroying it.
