Probable causes of the landslide in the Kotsifou gorge

In mid-March, a huge rockslide occurred in the Kotsifou gorge. Huge fragments of rocks along with protective devices fell from a great height directly onto the road leading through the gorge. Some of the rock fragments even reached the stream flowing at the bottom of Kotsifou. Today, proceedings were initiated at the Crete Regional Council to select a company that will clean up the entire mess. However, judging by the photos taken from the road level, this will not be an easy task. It will also be necessary to perform specialized analyzes and security measures that will increase the safety level of traveling on this road in the future.

Preliminary analyzes of the causes of the last landslide indicate that the detachment of the rocks may have been caused by vegetation, the roots of which penetrate the rock cracks as they grow. Ultimately, this leads to the weakening of the rock structure.

It is worth emphasizing that the breakdown of the security system, which was carried out at the end of last year, was caused by significantly exceeding the strength of the building materials, and not by their incorrect installation or defective construction. The safeguards were designed to stop falling rocks weighing up to 10.7 tons. The falling rock block had a volume of 27 m3 and a mass of 70 tons. While falling, it literally swept away a 30-meter-long fence and a 300-square-meter safety net beneath it.

During the recent works, no activities were carried out that could have a negative impact on the stability of the rock mass. On the contrary, anchors for securing the protective structures and their cementing increased the cohesion of the rocks. The materials used were in accordance with the technical documentation, and the project was carried out by a company with experienced staff and appropriate equipment. Throughout the entire period of work, neither the construction team nor the supervisors observed anything that could herald an upcoming landslide. During the implementation of previous protection measures, only attention was paid to the need to clear the protected slope of vegetation from the surface, which the Forest District did not allow.
