March 25 is the day when Greeks celebrate their Independence Day. Crowds of people gathered in many cities, both in Crete and Athens, to watch the parades organized on this occasion. Also in smaller towns, numerous events were organized that allowed Greek citizens to enjoy this day. Today's holiday is also a reason for Greeks to express their pride in a special way. Every year on this occasion, huge national flags are hung in various places. For example, today in Heraklion, a 1,440 square meter flag was raised at the Koules Fortress for a few hours.

The Greek Revolution in 1821 contributed to the creation of the modern Greek state and ultimately regaining independence. Of course, it didn't happen immediately, because we still had to wait for the result. However, with the support of France, Great Britain and Russia, Greece finally gained independence in 1830.
Giorgos Mylonakis, mayor of Kissamos in Crete, said today: “ As Greeks, we owe an eternal debt to always remember that the democratic achievements for which revolutionaries sacrificed themselves are not given forever. We must continue to fight and defend the fundamental principles of peace, democracy and freedom, which are an inexhaustible source of courage, responsibility and optimism for the present and future of our country .
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitostakis, who is currently in Canada, was absent from today's celebrations in Greece. On the occasion of Independence Day, he took part in a parade organized by the Greek community in Montreal.
