The slow filling of retention reservoirs is not the only benefit from several days of intense rainfall in Crete. Thanks to them, characteristic small waterfalls appeared again in the Ha Gorge in eastern Crete.
The impressive Ha Gorge is easiest to see from the road connecting the town of Pachia Ammos on the northern coast with the town of Ierapetra in southern Crete. When driving along this road, it is impossible to miss the characteristic cracked rock visible even from a considerable distance. To take a closer look at it, it is worth deviating a few kilometers from the main road, passing the town of Monastiraki, and finding yourself at the foot of steep rock walls that rise several hundred meters up.
The Ha Gorge is located on the western slope of the Thriptis massif and its total length is only 1.5 kilometers. The entrance to the Ha gorge is at an altitude of 370 m, and the exit from it is at an altitude of 140 m. However, it is not a gorge intended for so-called ordinary tourists. Ha is considered one of the wildest gorges in Greece and one of the most difficult to cross, but also one of the ten most beautiful gorges in all of Europe. While crossing the gorge, you have to overcome 26 technical descents, the longest of which is 30 m long. Therefore, only shoes and some fitness are not enough to overcome it. In this case, you also need climbing equipment and appropriate skills and experience.
