An unusual phenomenon called the "cappuccino coast" appeared today on the beaches of southern Crete. Among other things, the beaches in Matala and Kommos were covered with characteristic foam resembling that produced when preparing cappuccino coffee. Moreover, the name of this drink was the source of a concise description of this peculiar phenomenon.

Scientists claim that this foam is the result of the sea self-cleaning. This phenomenon only occurs when appropriate weather conditions persist for a sufficiently long time. One of the requirements for creating cappuccino foam is the presence of a very strong wind accompanied by huge waves appearing on the sea. This is when salt, decaying remains of marine fauna and flora that are normally found on the seabed, plankton and other pollutants begin to mix with the emerging air bubbles. As a result of the action of this specific sea shaker, thick foam is created, which is carried by the waves and thrown ashore in large quantities. This phenomenon is quite common in the Pacific where it occurs after storms.
