The terrorist attack by Hamas on Israel and the escalation of military actions by both sides of the conflict resulted in the cancellation of flights between Heraklion in Crete and Tel Aviv. Unfortunately, this means that as of today, approximately 1,500 Israeli tourists who spent their holidays in Crete cannot return to their country.
On Saturday, after the attack on Israel, air connections from Crete operated normally. Israeli tourists who had a scheduled flight that day were able to return to their homes without any problems. On Saturday, however, not everyone decided to return. Of the group of 350 people who were supposed to return to Tel Aviv, about 20 Israeli citizens decided to stay in Crete. These people left the airport, rented hotels in Heraklion and are waiting for the situation to develop.
Currently, however, other tourists have no choice, as all scheduled and charter flights from Crete to Israel have been canceled. The Greek carrier Aegean Airlines also suspended its services to local airports. Many major airlines from other countries canceled connections, thus cutting off the possibility of returning even in a roundabout way. Tourists whose holidays have already ended are forced to rent rooms and wait for air connections to be restored. Therefore, it can be expected that the number of "forced" tourists in Crete will increase. According to a representative of one of the largest Israeli tour operators, many people want to leave, others are afraid and prefer to stay. The problem, however, is that some of these people no longer have money to continue their stay in Crete. These people are trying to contact Israelis who have bought houses on the island, asking them to provide hospitality.
Currently, only Cypriot airlines offer connections to Tel Aviv for the next few days. TUS Airways announced several additional connections, but they are only from Athens.
It is worth noting that in 2022, 134,000 tourists from Israel spent their holidays in Crete. Data from this year's season are not yet complete, but the number is estimated at about 150,000 people.
