Greek burning of Judas

This weekend the Greeks celebrate Easter, which they celebrate in a special way. One of the more special celebrations took place in Agios Nikolaos, where the celebrations were organized in the area of Lake Volusmeni. This scenery not only attracted a large number of residents, but also tourists who are currently resting in Crete.

Of course, according to the local tradition, during the celebration of the Night of the Resurrection of the Lord, one more characteristic element of these celebrations could not be missing: Judas's funeral pyre. Unlike other cities, where the effigy of Judas is placed in squares or streets, in Agios Nikolaos its place is in the middle of the lake. The burning of the platform on which the effigy was placed and the fireworks show complemented the symbolic resurrection of Christ proclaimed by the clergy. Finally, it is worth mentioning that not everywhere the celebrations had such a wonderful and predictable course. In the local press, information appeared that in some towns residents complained about the organization. It happened that the stacks were too large and after being set on fire they burned so intensely that people gathered around them were forced to flee.

The celebrations organized in front of the Church of the Assumption in Heraklion also ended with an unpleasant surprise. Poorly thought-out location and poor protection of the pile resulted in damage to the surface of the local road. The high temperature and embers of the fire melted and burned part of the asphalt. It can be said that this time the Judas effigy had an admixture of a malicious imp.
