The Kissamos Municipal Council decided to implement legislation to protect the Elafonissi beach area. Specifically, it is about installing a barrier to prevent vehicles from entering the protected environmental zone adjacent to the beach. According to the plans, this barrier is to be installed this year before the high tourist season. Anyone who has traveled to Elafonissi by car surely remembers that nowadays parking is possible not only on an unpaved square. Drivers who want to park in the shade drive further into the area covered with trees and bushes. And this is where the local authorities want to start protecting.
This means that people who come to the beach will have to leave their cars at the end of the asphalt road and then walk another 350 meters. Only emergency services, landowners, a catering company and people with disabilities who will arrive by electric car will be able to enter the unpaved car park outside the barrier. Buses can also park here.
Elafonisi is not only a beach with pink sand considered one of the most beautiful in Europe. The immediate vicinity of Elafonissi beach together with the lagoon form a nature reserve that has been included in the Natura 2000 list. The sandy area in front of the beach, below 20 meters above sea level, used to be the seabed, and is now covered with various species of plants. Unfortunately, currently there are access roads and a wild parking lot between the trees.
It is one of the most valuable natural places in Europe, where priority habitats and species are registered, as well as those entered in the Red Book of Threatened Species. The presence of unique Androcymbium rechingeri lilies is particularly important here. It is a very rare endemic species characteristic only of Crete. It grows at Elafonissi beach and in several other places on the west coast of Crete. The Elafonissi area is also an important migration corridor for birds that rest here before embarking on the long flight towards Africa.
The commune authorities are aware that the introduction of new rules means great difficulties, but they declare their will to face them. If we manage to implement the adopted solutions, it will certainly be a big step towards the protection of endangered nature.

Izabela Brzoska Brak leżaków to będzie prawdziwa rewolucja. Jeśli chodzi o ograniczenia czasu i rezerwacje w aplikacji to powątpiewam w skuteczność tego rozwiązania. Jedna kwestia kto będzie pilnował czasu i ludzi, druga to taka że Grecja nie jest zbyt informatycznym krajem. Tego typu rozwiązania jak na razie średnio im wychodzą.

Wystarczy wprowadzić opłaty wstępu jak do parku narodowego. Ograniczyć leżaki. Muszę stwierdzić ze parkowanie tam w krzakach ma swój urok. Takie na dziko.
