Cretans donate blood for those injured in a train crash

Today's media attention in Greece has been completely captured by the biggest train disaster that happened in Tempi in the central part of mainland Greece. The passenger train collided head-on with a freight train. Both trains, due to the wrong decision of the station master, were moving on the same track at high speed. So far, at least 38 people have been confirmed dead and dozens injured. In Greece, three days of national mourning were declared and flags were lowered to half-mast.

This tragedy touched everyone in Greece. The Cretans quickly responded to appeals to donate blood, so much needed to the most severely injured. The attendance at two blood donation points was quite high. Already at one o'clock in the afternoon, the first cargo plane with the transport of blood units could depart from Heraklion airport for Athens. It is worth noting that today's take-off of this aircraft was absolutely unique, as the main runway in Heraklion is undergoing resurfacing.
