What is the most popular food item in Greece? You'll probably say it's feta. And there will be a lot of truth in this statement, because the Greeks actually eat the most feta in the world. However, there is one more product that is so popular that even those who do not consume it later buy it.
So what are we talking about? About coffee! How do you imagine the average Greek? Of course drinking coffee. Those who say that sipping ouzo or smoking a cigarette will also be partly right. However, it is with coffee that many Greeks start their day.
Those who declare that they do not drink coffee at all are only 5%. Interestingly, however, among these coffee abstinents, 66% buy it for the needs of their household members, which further increases the statistics of the popularity of this stimulant.
50% of people declaring that they drink coffee every day regularly drink even 2-3 cups of small black coffee every day.
73% of coffee drinkers claim that they cannot replace it with other beverages, and 53% of respondents have never thought about giving up drinking coffee. However, if quitting this habit was required for health reasons, 17% of respondents would be ready to undergo this test. 14% of people declare that they could give up drinking coffee due to financial shortcomings.
In the morning, popular cafes fill up with Greeks who start their day like this. Quick coffee, often accompanied by a cigarette, is also an opportunity to meet friends in the morning. It's a certain lifestyle. This is probably why 38% of people surveyed said that reducing their coffee consumption would also reduce their social interactions. From the results obtained in the study, 62% of people prefer to drink coffee at a coffee table, and only 33% buy takeaway coffee.
What are the reasons why people in Greece drink so much coffee? As many as 55% say that coffee stimulates them. However, 42% say that the black drink relaxes them.
These statistics were provided by a nationwide study by Kάπα Research, which aimed to profile the Greek consumer.
This study is probably a preparation for the battle to grab as much of the market as possible. In Greece, coffee is one of the three products that top companies are fiercely competing for in order to increase their market share. Coca-Cola, which is the dominant producer of soft drinks, intends to increase its share of the Greek coffee market to 10% and then gain a leading share within a few years. Fierce competition is also announced by the Italian company Caffè Vergnano, which wants to reach 300 stores with its offer by the end of this year, to finally achieve the goal of being present in 1,000 stores over the next 3 years.
