The Cretan griffon vulture is set free

Such news makes me the most happy! Yesterday, a young griffon vulture was released into the wild, which had been in Kapsa Monastery in southern Crete since September last year. This mighty bird was taken care of by people in a very bad condition, but after several months of careful rehabilitation, it was able to spread its huge wings again and take off into the sky.

The vulture flew to freedom on top of a hill in an old military unit at Mysirio in Sitia . As the witnesses say, it was a very emotional moment when the wild bird prepared itself for flight and flew away slowly. The current carers, on the one hand, emphasize their joy that they managed to cure the wild animal and return it to freedom, on the other hand, they are worried whether the vulture will manage.

Unfortunately, we do not know why people had to take care of the vulture, but last year the Cretan media alarmed that the warming climate in Crete creates unfavorable conditions, especially for young individuals. With increasingly hot and dry summer days, these majestic birds have trouble finding water and food and become dehydrated quickly. If hotter summers become a regular phenomenon, it will be necessary to build special waterholes in the high mountains of Crete so that these animals survive in changing conditions.
